UItWAMY- SALES HEAVY IN DECEMBER lichland Leads, Florence Second, Chasleton Third. List of New En. terprses. Columbia, January 10.--Charleston county sold $592,186.93 worth of whiskey, beer and wines during the year 1913, according to flguros com piled by Wtate Dispensary Auditor Mitohum. The operating expenses for the dispensaries in Charleston County during last year amounted to $38,037.-. 64, the broker'age -to $551.65, and the not profits to about $110,000, estimat ed. The net profits for the last quar ter have not been reported, but figur - ing on the basis of the first three quarters, which amounted to $84,382. 05, the net profits should run about $110,000 for the year. December was a -big month in the grog shops of South Carolina. There was sold during that period an aggre gate of $465,234.31 in the dispensaries of the State. 'Figures for the year 1913 were not available today, but an estimate shows that $3,000,000 will probably represent the amount of alcoholic li quors sold during the year. Of this Richland county sold close to $1,000, 000. Sales by Counties. The December figures show that twelve counties operated with dispen saries. Orangeburg's dispensaries did not get started until nea'rly the end of the month, so no figures are given for sales and operating expenses from that county. Richland led the December sales, with Florence second, Charleston be ing third. Aiken sold $43,208.95 and had $1,989 in operating expenses. Danberg's sales amounted .to $20, 036.82, with $781.10 in operating ex penses. Barnwell's sales for December were $35,520.72, with operating expenses of $1,286.98. 'Beaufort sold in liquors, 'beer, etc, $21,856.57, while the operating expens es were $901.19. Calhoun sold $14,716.22, and the op orating expenses were $400.43. Charleston's sales were $68,769.88, while the operating expenses were $3,241.25. Florence county had -heavy sales during (Decem'her disposing of $80, 437.85 worth of alcoholic beverages, and the expenses of operation were $2,153.74. Georgetown sold $22,961.80 and had $682.91 in operating expenses. Jasper county sold $3,260.40 and the operation of the dispensaries cost $184.76. Union county sold $27,444.35 and the expenses of operation were $460.26. Elmore broke the new year last Thursday night with an old time break clown. Quite a crowd was there and all reported a very pleasant time. Mir. L. M. C. Moore was a business visitor in Laurens Saturday. 'Mr. Carl Redden and sister, Miss Alice, spent Saturday night and Sun day with Mr. G. W. Moore and family. Moore spent Saturday night and Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. C. Moore. Mr. G. W. Moore was in town Sat urday on business. 'Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stribbling are visiting in Laurens. Misses Annie Sue and Lit. Cannon are spending a while in Greenville. Mr. U. S. Elmore is being kept very busy sawing these days. Mr. M. T. Simpson has at his horn here a beautiful orange tree which h has grown from seed plant. The tre is now five years old and is bear lag 36 pretty oranges. The fruit o course, is of diminutive size, being about one-fourth that of the semi tropical orange, but the little tree wit] its yellow fruitage presents a beauti ful appearance.
