Leiters, should not he mailed later than ?-.iday morn ing. Wouldn't a Couple of dollars paid as Income tax bo good advertising ? ? ? Fourteen cents cotton and a plenty of grain and corn In the crib spells prosperity. ? * . If Spartanburg undertakers war ov er a dead body, what would they do over a real live citizen? ? ? ? Horace Qroely said "Young man, go west!" The government agents now say, "Young man, sow grain". Both were correct. ? ? ? Somebody has said that the Thanks giving proclamation of tho president is different from all those that have gone before. Probably so. Maybe it Is different hocauso it was written by the man who signed it. ? ? ? The long awr.ited Mexican oloc tloilB, OXpOCtod to end the tenseness in the Latin republic below us, have passod and the end Is not yot in sight. President Wilson has his band at the throttle and still Is master of the Ritual ion. ? * * So "Jpmmollno" Is with us already yet. She sed:ns lo no having a gay time over here and the nocosslty has not yot arisen for her to go on a hunger strike. What if she would? Wo would just as llovo have her try it to add to the gaiety. ? ? * it is estimated that tho crops of Laurens county this year will be Worth Olli million dollars more Mi in tho crops of last year. Of this, how much will remain In tho county and how much will bo sent off for things that could be made at home? ? ? ? The statements of the different banks published in this issue of The Advertiser show that they are in a flourishing condition. Tho banks of Laurens County are very conserva tively managed and tho prosperity of the county Is roftected In thorn, ? i ? The Nowborry Observer advises against men trying to "write up" weddings. We wish Wo could follow that advice. The Observer also ad vises against the of "splendid" by reporters. That is good ndviCO, too, when there is time to hunt up a synonym, hut on some occasions time is lacking and the best has to bo made of tho situation. ? * ? The congestion of trafllc on such occasions as the state fair emphasizes the Imperative need of hotter passen ger accommodations on tho morning and evening trains to and from <'o lumbla. Mr. Livingstone might cele brate' bis accosslon to tho presidency by replacing tho present equipment with something better. The traffic doesn't demand Pullman palace ears throughout, but it would bear up un der something better than that now being used. ? * ? OH. YOU "MBLLMRDRAMER"! -Says the Oreenvlllo Piedmont: "An Anderson man is called an Andcr sonlnn, What would yon call a man from .lacks in Laurens county? That's easy. A .lacksonlan, of course. tip in North Carolina thoy would pro-1 bably call him an Andrew Jacksonlan." ?Hock Hill Herald. Probably so. Mut what would a man from Greenville be called? ? ? ? A NEW MOTEL. With tho present movement or agi tation to build a new and up-to-date hotel in Laurens, The Advertiser Is thoroughly in sympathy. That there is an urgent need and a widespread demand for the hotel In this city can not bo denied, For years the city has 1>een a back number, so to sprcak, in tho way of hotel facilities and the time haa come when something should be done to Temedy the situation. The Advertiser has no desire to see the presont hotel owner? suffer any loss- ] ea that might come about by the building of a newer structure In any other part of the city, but we feel that the public do.nand for a hotel in this city is such that wo must have one, some how or other. We are quite sure that the business people of Lau rens, to a man, would co-operate with the owners of the present hotel prop* erty In bringing it up to a condition commensurate with the size and dig nity of the town. There is no need of arguing the need or tho advanto of a better equipped hotel. It seems to us that the only thing needing dis cus' ion is how large it should be and llOW to get it. The people of LaUI'OAS should get together on this matter and build a hotel In keeping with the sisJO and growth of the city. 88888888888S888888SS 8 8 8 STATE PRESS COMMENT. 8 8 6 8888888 8 888888888888 Awakening in Tills State. In Lauren8 county two school dis tricts have consolidated and erected a, brick school house adequate for the needs of the community. This one school will take the place of twoj f/ormor schools. Children from re mote sections of tho district will be taken to the school, and brought homo again each day in a conveyance pro vided for this purpose, In adopting this plan of school consolidation the pat ions of the two Laurens district.; show their appreciation of improved educational plans. Two small schools, neither which Is adequately equippod, cannot do the efficient work which one large school can do. Concentration of effort and facilities will bring results which scattering efforts, and make shift facilities can never hope to j bring. This action of the Lailrons county districts and of Cupt. .1. W. C. Bell,| a resident of Ren no, In donating four ?acres for the school, show that in this State where education lias been shame fully neglected, there is a growing demand that the children be given the same chance In life that children of other States enjoy. The Ren 110 consol idated school is being conducted in accordance with modern ideas. The Civic League is ondeavorlag to make the grounds attractive, thus adding to the cultural value cf tho institution, The two districts voted a special live mill tax for the maintenance of the school. The people of these two districts are to be commended for their ro gressivenoss. They have done what people of all sections should do, but tho fact remains that many com munities do not act so intelligently, hence the Laurens districts have dis tinguished themselves. A great need of this State today is more such interest in the welfare of the coining generation. It is a blot upon South Carolina, to allow her children to grow tip unlit ted to take the same rank which children from other States can take. It is un fair to the Children to treat them so, and every child has a right to a fair chance in tills world. All of us re bel at what we call a "dirfy deal." All of us demand a "square deal. But what "dirtier deal" is there than to let a child grow up in ignorance, to be a drudge all of bis or her life, to* look at others who have no more] inate ability outstrip him or her What can be more unfair than to bring a child Into this world and then loavo that child to bo one of the liabilities of society, instead of an asset, which every normal child could be? Ignornnco is a curse, and fail ure to attempt to extirpate it, is a in this day of rapidly movini machinery of civilization, tli? man who has no Individuality is lost, in the general trend of events, lie is power less to augment the onward march, and unintentionally retards it because he was neglected when a Child. The rudiments of education are essential for the conservation of Individuality? something which must, he conserved, else we detoriorato. it is difficult to understand how a parent can be so lacking in a sense of repsonsibility as to neglect a child. UnlOSS this parent was In turn neglected, this lack of re sponsibility is a crime. And here Is whore tin- question of child ownership enters. If there be such parents, as unquestionably thore are, then should other elements of society enter in. The child is a part of society, and society should protect its parts, or itself. And the child j has rights, is part owner of himself or herself. The parent, the child and society, then are conjointly the keopers of the child, and no one of thom should have absolute domin ance. Therefore vhen the parent is negligent society has a right to take a hand, ami give the child a fair show, give tho child its rights.?Greenville Newa. Cures Old Sores, Other Remedies Won't Cure.
