INDICTMENTS DISMISSED BY CHARLESTON JURORS Liquor Indictment* Made b) taw und Order League did not Meet with the Favor of Charleston Crnnd Jury. Charleston, Oct. 10. ?The gran.I jury today threw out forty-two of the two hundred and ninety liquor Indict ments handed thom last Wednesday, and in ait probability the balance will tuko the same route to extinction. Foreman Devoraux said this afternoon that witnesses had l)een examined In all of the \2 cases ejected and that the grand jury was dead locked over the situation. The judge's remarks to tho grand Jury When they returned no bills in 12 of tho eases presented to them were in substance that thoro was h farco somewhere, lie then asked the jury if it was their intention to go on with the other eases since such a large pro portion has been thrown out. The Jury replied that they had not decided whether to continue tho consldorutlon or to throw tho romalnedr of the cases out. Later if developed tlint the grand jury was practically through with the cases. This action of the grand jury can hardly bo called a surprise as It lias been generally supposed that the big batch of Indictments would hard ly get through tl step necessary to put them before It juries. The grand jur> ? the first -place did not care to make presentiment of the eases brought by the law and order league, so the solicitor wrote out bills of indictment and handed them to tho grand jury for action, either to bring in true bills or no bills. Many factors it is thought, have en tered Into tho situation so far as the grand jury and the general public an concerned. The expense of trying hundreds of liquor casos, the time re quired, the dllllCUlly of securing OVl donCO to convict, tho history of liquor cases before petit, juries in tho past, and the fat t that for several adminis trations tho blind tigers in Charleston have been nothing more than a licens ed Institution as the records of the city will show, all have bearing on the present situation. It appears upon evidence a ?ainst some 100 gambling dens and blind tigers in the city has been wasted as the grand Jury snaps it's linger in tholr faces and llagrant violation of law, which has made tho reputation of this city not unlike that of Sodom and Oommorrah, will remain en throned jn state. Mrs. Hughes of Greenville, i president, called the meeting to order and delegates were enrolled at the afternoon session |?Yiday. That even nig Rev. C. F. Kankin, or Laureas preached on Home Missions and Mrs. Mott Martin, missionary to Africa, math; an interesting talk about the work in that country. Saturday morn ing and afternoon was business ses sions. Saturday night w had a line address by Rev. Wood.'OW ilassell, a son of a former paste.- )f this church, and a volunteer to the foreign field, ami a missionary dialogue by Mrs. Albn of Uruonvlllo and Mrs. II. I.. Austin oT Cross Hill, A pageant by little girls was an other feature of the evening. A num ber of girls hearing lights to give light to those that were in darkness, representing the gospel light, to light en the world. Sunday morning Dr. Richardson preached to a large congregation. I feel like the choir ought to bo com plimented for the splendid music und thanks to inotubors of tin; other churches who so ably assisted in the singing. Hev. J. A. Martin of the Baptist church came with his people and worshipped with the Presbyteri ans. There were Interesting exer cises Sunday afternoon and preach ing again in the evening by Dr. I). W. Richardson. A short session Monday morning and the Presbytcrial ad journed to meet next year at Union, S. C. Cross Hill, Oct. 13.- -Miss Jenlo B. Wade h it last Friday to teach school at Jamison, s. C. 'Mr. ,1. W. Koon has a 1-2 acre planted in long staple cotton, lie has gathered 969 lbs from it and will net enough to make a good bale, 500 lbs more. Mr. .1. 10. Griffin counted 10*1 bolls on one stalk in his cotton. All are mature and wide open. invitations have been recolvod here 10 the marriage of Dr. William lum ber! Nance to Miss Claire Booth of Atlanta. Ca., Oct. 22. Dr. Nance is the youngest son of Mr. R. D. Nance and has many friends ami relatives here who will be interested to see tills an nouncement. Dr. Nance graduated in dentistry a few years ago and is now located at Fort Valley, Ca. Cast week the cotton business was lively licit-. Farmers were pleased with the price offered and as a rule they brought it from the field on to the ginnery and sold it. Instead of Wootlrow "Wilson's election depress ing prices, we believe Wilson and McAdoo has bellied to bring better times. FarVnors were busy last week mak ing hay also, and quite a line lot of 11 was saved although the weather was threatening at times. Our young friend, James Wade Hill, who was operated upon for appendici tis last week in Columbia is reported to be getting along alright and we hope will soon be well again.
