Tho following was taken from the Saturday afternoon edition of The Co lumbia Record:1 "A man convicted of getting the bet ter end of tho bargain In a horse trade has been pardoned. "Frank Stone, white, convicted at tho fall term, 1912, of court for Lau ren s county of the chargo of obtain ing goods under false pretenses and sentenced to pay a fino of J300 or servo 30 days on the public works, 'has been declare a free man by the governor. "In granting the pardon, Governor Please said: i " 'It seems that this party and the ! prosecutor traded horses, and that this is what brought'about the indict ment. From the evidence presented ! in the case, it shows that tho horse I was supposed to 'have been blind in I one eye and partially blind in the 'other. This was a defect which could I have been very easily detected by both parties. There Is no excuse for a man saying that a blind horse has been put off upon him, unless he was either blind or drunk at the time, and there Is no evidence to show that the prosecutor was either. Therefore, lie should have been too much of a man to complain, for the only 'purpose people have for trading horses Is to Improve. If A trades with B, A ex pects to get the best of the bargain, I or A would not trade. When Ii trades with A, he believes he got the host of tho bargain or ho would not have traded. Nabers were the guests last Fri day till Monday of Mr. and Mrs. It. A. Austin. Mr. Nabers is a LaurenS boys and has been engaged for several years with the Western Electric Co. witb headquarters at Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Dora Nabors his mother, has been with thorn at Pittsburgh, the last six months. IIIb wife is a Pennsylvania lady. She was never in the South at this season of the year before and the cotton ploking and ginning is some thing she never had seen before. IDr. and Mrs. Miller arrived at home last Wednesday from their extended trip to Europe. They were quite well and enjoyed tholr trip very much On their return trip tholr ship encounter ed a severe gale sand all the passen gers were more or less excited for awhile. Their frlouds welcome them home. Dr. Mills of Newberry Is in town and will probably locate here to practice medicine. He is a recent graduate of the Charleston Medical College. There was quarterly meeting at the Methodist church Saturday and preach ing by the Presiding Elder Sunday. Miss Janlo Griffin will leave today for Chlcora College Dr. H. H.
