Nettles, editor of the Southern Christian Advocate. The ?committee tuet yesterday afternon at St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal church, in West Oroonvillo, with Rev. P. P. K1lgo, presiding older, In the chair. Following is the official roport of the committee upon the hearing yes terday afternoon: Rev. S. A. Nettles having requested an investigation of rumors detrimen tal to him, the committee of investi gation, composed of Itov. Ij. I'. McCiOO, Rev. W. I0, Wiggins and Kev. W. M. OwlllgS, met at SI. Jones appeared as counsel for the licensed nnd request ed that each witness bo examined without the presence of other witness es. Rov. .1. Cauthcn appeared as a prosecuting witness and claimed the right to associate with him, as CO prescuting witnesses, about one fourth of the Witnesses summoned. Tlie chair ruled they would have to ap point one of their number as the ac cuser or prosecuting witness. After a brief consultation with one another Mr. Cauthcn said: "Wo appeal from your ruling and have nothing further tor you am) will carry the matter to the annual conference." He then with drew, some of bis witnesses retiring with him. Whereupon the chair ad dressed the remaining witnesses, ask ing them if they had any accusations to bring against Rev. s. A. Nettles. There bolllg no response, the chair Instructed the committee to prcpffrc their decision and they rendered the following: "No accusation and no evi dence being brought before the com mittee, we lind no trial necessary." Jones' Statement. Rev. k. :s. Jones, who represented Rev. s. A. Netties in the Investiga tion held yesterday afternoon, made the following statement last night: "This Investigation was called at the request of Mr. Nettles. For some time untrue rumors of an Irritating and rollccting character had been coming to Mr. Nettles" ears, and he decided that the best course to be pursued was to ask for an investiga tion. In the letter he addressed to Rev. I'. P. Kllgo, presiding elder of this district. Mr. Nettles stated that Rov. A. J. Cauthcn, of Spartanburg, S. C, Claim? d to know of these de rogatory matters, "When Mr. Cauthcn was requested to appear before the investigating committee, he wrote that he would be on hand, but that be would not appear as Mr. Nettles' accuser, for he knew nothing against him, but would ?simply furnish accusations that have logically been given me." The presiding elder then requested Mr. Cauthcn to furnish him the names of these accusers, in order that they might He notified to ap pear before the committee of inves tigation. Mr. Cauthcn replied with a list of fifty-five names. Each of these was Informed by letter of the date, place and purpose of the In vestigation and was asked to be presont. Many of these did not ap pear. As a matter of fact, many of the persons whose names appeared on the list furnished by Mr. Cauth cn expressed surprise at being sum moned, stating that they knew noth ing whatever against Mr. Nettles; and one of thorn goes so far as to say that, prior to tho receipt of the summons, he had never heard of either Mr. Nettles or Mr. Cauthcn. In view of these facts, it is difficult to under stand by what 'logical' channel ac cusations by theso parties reached Mr. Cauthen's hands. "Mr. Cauthcn appeared before the investigating committee this afternoon in the character of the accuser or prosoctlting witness. "When the time came to begin the taking of testimony, Mr. Jones, as Mr. Nettle's counsel, re quested that each witness .,r,ve his testimony without other witnesses be ing present. Mr. Cauthen made stren uous objection to this, stating that there would be quite a number of oth ers associated with him as prosecut ing witnesses. The chair said that, in Ills opinion, this joining of others as prosecuting witnesses In order to have them present throughout the pro ceeding*, would amount to a dodging of the church l:iw on the point, and therefore ruled that only one person could remain present throughout the proceedings as prosecuting witness. "After a hurried consultation with his would-be associate accusers or prosecuting witnesses, Mr. Cautheu announced that he would proceed no father before the committee, but would appeal from the ruling of the Chair, and take the matter bet?re tho next annual conference. Hav ing so delivered himself, he and some of his witness abruptly with drew. The witnesses who remained were then askod by the chair tr they had anything to say against Mr. Nettlos, There was no response, and the chair Instructed tho committee to prepare their decision. They decided that no trial was necessary. "The reason why Mr. Nettles de sired the exclusion of all witnesses except the one testifying is obvious. It is not positively known why Mr. Cauthcn was so strongly opposed to this usual manner of procedure, but from what was said on the floor by one of Mr. Cauthon's associates who desired to bo present during all the examination of witnesses, apparently the reason was, not because they bad any testimony to offer ugalnst Mr. Nettle , but merely because they wanted to see that It was not made id appear thai Mr. Cauthen was prosecuting Mr. Nettles. "Mr. Nettles rogrcts exceedingly that .after all preparations had been made io ko throughly Into the mat ter, Mr. Cauthcn refused to produce the accusations Which he had prom ised to produce." Statement from Other Side. The following statement has been giv en out for publication from Spartan burg: "The undersigned wore at Green ville on Wednesday afternoon for the purpose of participating in the Inves tigation of ROV. S. A. Nettles. Wo have studiUOSTy avoided newspaper publicity In this matter, both for tho! sake of the church and of Mr. Nettles. We are sorry that the presiding elder of the Greenville district andRev. E. 9. Jones, counsel for Mr. Nettles, saw lit to publish in the secular press their statoinent of what occured, be cause wo do not believe that the secu lai press is the place for this particu lar matter, nor will we be drawn into a newspaper controversy over it .ac cording to our present attidlldc to ward the (tuestIon . We have prepared an exhaustive statement with reference to tho whole mailer and had intended to hand it to the secular press this day. After ma ture deliberation, we have COIUC to the conclusion that it would do neither us, Mr. Netties and his friends, the church; nor the Advocate any good, to make public these mat ters at the present time. We earnest ly desire to do nobody all injustice or injury, and for this reason decline to be drawn into public prints at the present time about it. We believe thai the decorous and orderly thing to do is to proceed according to the discipline of (he church and we de cllne to be diverted therefrom. Our ?present intention Is that whatever may be said or done shall reach the proper sources. Barnwell, Sept. 21.?There will be no reunion of the Hurvlvors of the Wallace House, held in Harnwell this year, owing to the death of .Major John VV. Holmes, of Harnwell, last Decem ber, and the more recent demise of Capt. J. G. Gulgnard. of Columbia, ac cording to a statement made public this week. il*a?t year one of the features of the Harnwell county reunion was a meet ing of nearly all of the survivors of that history-making body, under the auspices of the County Kail Associa tion. Some twelve or fourteen attend' od, and the day was thoroughly enjoy e I by the townspeople and the guests ; like. It was planned at that time to make these annual reunions a perma nent featrue of the fair, but the man agement feels, and rightly, that the .deaths of these two illustrious sons of South Carolina would east a gloom over the meeting, ami make it more a day of mourning than one of rejoicing. After Decem ber :j 1 st. one per cent will be added. After January 31st, two per cent wilt be added, and after February 28th, Beven per cent, will be added till the Loth day of March, 1914, when the books will be closed.
