ARTHUR LEB Sec. and Treas. Advertising Rutes on Application. Obituaries and Card of Thanks: One cent a word. Entered at the postoffice at Lau r ens, S. C, as second class mall matter. LAURENS, H. < ? AUGUST 20, 101?, The Adrertlser will be clad to receive the local news of all the communities in the county. Cor. respondents are requested to sign tliolr names to the contri butions.. Letters should not be mailed luter than Monday morn ing. .4 The county fair wheels are just be ginning to turn, ? * ? Will South Carolina make enough corn this year for home consumption? Hardly, but she will eome near or than she has ever down before and that is a great step forward. ? ? ? The Pee Dee counties sold over n million do!!;:::: worth of tobneeo this year. It Is said that many of the farmers are paying off their notes out of the tobacco money, leaving the cot ton for cash money. This is the re sult of diversification. ? ? ? The last report on the corn crop In Kansas gavr? the confdltlon at 30, a drop of about, forty points In a month. This means that corn will bo high until another crop Is made. Partners In this section should fool thankful that the main crop of all kinds was good this year and that they win not be affected as much as here tofore by high priced feed. ? ? ? PARDONS KOIl POLITICS. That OOV. Cole L, Please will not be a candidate for office HOXl BUmtUOt' is the opinion of many leading Ander son county Please suportet'S. Re cent actions of the Governor In ex tending executive clemency, affecting Anderson county, is the cause of this belief, and it is shared in by many of the most prominent Please men of the county.?Anderson Intelligencer. If the friends of the governor believe that he issues pardons and paroles for political effect, surely others can be excused for bollovlng the same thing. ? ? ? HASTEN THE TARIFF. Now thut the season is fast ap proaching when the agricultural pro ducts of the country are to be mar keted, southern and western senators and representatives In congress should begin to push tariff and cur rency legislation in order that the country's business will be on a sound and settled condition when the crops are harvested. Unless the tariff and currency measures are put through at a very early date, the farm products of the country are liable to be forced on the market under very unfavorable conditions, resulting in groat loss to the producers. Even though every business Interest In the country might have come to accept as a fact that the tariff is to be revised down ward and that the prosperity of the country as a whole will not suffer thereby, a feeling of uncertainty ex ists that can only be put to an end by the detlniteness that the president's signature would give. The great niaiv ufacturing intercuts no longer fear the tariff as they did, but business ex pansion Will hardly be undertaken until the country knows exactly what to expect nnd'what to cope with. And before the country's markets will be able to take on the farmer's products at profitable prices, this uncertainty must be gotten' rid of. ? ? ? A REST ROOM. One thing that a great many other towns have that Laurens lias not and that she ought and could have is a rest room for ladies who do their shopping here. Such a room as this would contribute largely to the com fort of our visitors and prove a real boon to tired and worn-out shoppers who haven't elsewhere to go while waiting oni friends and relatives. I^ast year the rural school supervisor felt the need for such a room on several occasions when the county teachers gathered here for study and other business. There was no place for them to rest or pass the time away between meetings and naturally, we expeet, they objected to coining on this account, it has been suggested on several occasions that one of the grand jury rooms in the court house would fit admirably for thin purpose and we believe that It would. These rooms are quite airy In summer time and have steam heat and all other conveniences In winter time. How ever, they are not furnished, but we believe that the merchants of the city would gladly contribute to a fund to meet this need. Such a room ought really to be provided before the fall trade begins and before the school opens. 88888888888888888888 8 8 8 STATU PRESS COMMENT. 8 8 ? 88888888888888888888 Than!, , Due IIllll. The people of the fourth congres sional district ought to be and we believe are very grateful to Congress man Johnson for the active part he has taken In Inducing the government to deposit a considerable portion of the crop moving money in the banks of this city and Spartanburg.
