R. A. Cooper, of Laurens, and Railroad
Commissioner John G. Richards, of
Kershaw county, both announced can
didates for governor in the primary
of 1914, delivered addresses at Keitt's
Qrove on Thursday, the occasion be
ing a burlieri! ? served by Messrs. B.
M. Suber and O. A. Folker.
Moth these gentlemen are well
known in Newberry county.
Solicitor Cooper has been the pro
secuting officer In this the eighth ju
dicial circuit of thu State since May,
1905. He has displayed marked abili
ty and fairness, and his work as so
licitor has made him known as one
of the ablest and most fearless pro
secuting attorneys in South Carolina.
Thoroughly clnscicntiou3 in the dis
charge of his duties, and upright in
every walk of life, he has many waran
friends In Newberry county and
throughout the State.
Major Richards has previously cam
paigned the State for governor, and
Is well known to the people of the
State. He Is a gentelman who has
made an enviable reputation as a man
of ability and of integrity. Holding
the position of rnllroad commissioner
by appointment, he was last summer
re-elected in a campaign which Is
known as one of the most heated ever
held in South Carolina. He has many
friends In Newberry county and In
this section of the State.
Thursday was Solicitor Cooper's
second appearance In Newberry coun
ty to deliver an address since he an
nounced his candancy for governor.
On the other occasion, however, he
was the guest of a fraternal order and
his address was along fraternal lines.

LISBON LOCALS.
Lisbon, July 26.?The crops are
needing rain Yery bad In our section.
The old corn has gone its limit, and
a half crop Is expected. The young
corn in the bottoms and low land has
a chance if we can get rain in a few
days. The cotton crop is very small,
but it has a much better chance than
corn.
Mr. R. H. Pasley, of Cold Point, Is
spending a while with his sisters, Mrs.
MUam and Mrs. Fuller.
Mrs. R. B. Watts, of Columbia, and
Miss Dora Mefford of tMnyesvlile,
Tenn., are spending this week with
Mrs. J. T. a. Ballew.
Mrs. Mllam has been very sick, but
we are glad to state that she is much
better.
Mrs. M. B. Humbert and young Miss
Humbert, of Laurens have been vis
iting their mother and grandmother,
Mrs. Mary Smith.
Mr. Clarence Smith of Amorlcus,
Oa., spent a few days at home this
last week.
Mr. Simpson Malone has been very
much indisposed, also Mrs. Malone.
Misses Janle Brown and Katie
Clark, of Spartanburg have been vis
iting In this section.
Miss Sara and Heed Holmes are vis
iting in Abbeville.
Mr. Robert Pasley, of the Spartan
burg bar, spent a few days with rela
tives this last week.
Mrs. Eliza Fuller received message
last Wednesday from Florida of the
tragic death of her brother, Dr. H.
Pasley, who was thrown from his
horse.

Soventh-day Advcntists have no
creed but the Bible; they hold to cer
tain well defined poiuts for which they
feel prepared to give a reasou "to
every man that asketh" them.
They believe that there is one Qod,
a personal, spiritual being tho crea
tor of all things, omnipotent, omnis
cent, and eternal.
That there is one Lord Jesus Christ,
the son of the eternal Father, the one
by whom he created al lthings, and
by wham they do consist.
That tho Holy Scriptures of the Old
and New Testaments were given by
inspiration of Qod, contain a full rev-]
elation of His will to man, and are the
only infallible rule of faith and prac
tise.
That baptism is an ordinance of the
Christian Church, to follow faith and
repentance,? an ordinance by which
we commemorate tho resurrection of
Christ, as by this act we show our
faith in his burial and resurrection,
and that, in the resurrection of all
saints at the last day.
That the new birth comprises the
entire change necessary to lit us for
the Kingdom of Qod, and consists of
two parts: First, a moral change
wrought by conversion and a Chris
tian life. (.lohn 5:8.) Second, a
physical change at the second com
ing of Christ, whereby, if dead, we
are raised incorruptible, and If liv
ing, are changed to immortality in a
moment, In the twinkling of an eye.

That ?o?'b moral requirements are
the same upon all men in all dispen
sations; that these are summarily con
tained in the commandments spoken
by Jehovah from Sinai, graven on
tablets of stone, and deposited in the
ark which was in consequence called
the "ark of the covenant," or testa
ment; that this law is immutable and
perpetual) being a transcript of the
tables deposited in that ark in the true
scanctuary on high, which is also for
the same reason, called tho ark of
God's testament. Rev. 11:19.

this law requires that we devote the
seventh day of each week, common
ly called Saturday to abstlnance from
our own labor, and to the perform
ance of sacred and religious duties;

the Sabbath institution is based con
