'Waahinrgton, July 9.?Several In formal conferences were held today by Senator Smith of South Carolina with other . Southern legislators und cotton men In regard to the South Carolina senator's proposal for the reelection of a barrier In Alabama against the threatened invasion of the boll weevil Into the Saouth Atlantic cotton States. The subject of the conference was what steps the federal government should be asked to take nnd what the States and cotton growers themselves might be called upon to undertake in the light. All the plans discussed were aimed at an absolute abandon ment of the growing of cotton In a 50 mlle belt across Alabama from north to south with a view of preventing the boll weevil migrating east of this strip. A plan was under consideration to gain the cooperation of thread lace and mercerized goods manufacturers in the movement. This suggestion was based upon the fact that these articles are manufactured from sea island cot ton, most of which is grown ulong the coast of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It is said that the sea island cotton seed comes almost exclusively R'om South Carolina. Should the boll ?weevil onico get Into the sea island cotton fields, it Is said, it could scarce ly be eradicated because of the semi tropical temperature there. Another suggestion under consid eration was to raise a fund among cot ton growers of the Southeastern States to defray part of the expenses of es tablishing this barrier. It was esti mated that growers in the Southwest ern State expend annually as much as $5 an acre in fighting the weevil. A contribution of this amount from Eastern planters for ono year, It was urged, would go a long way toward establishing the barrier, with State and federal cooperation. Card of Thanks. Teague were shopping in Laurens last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Smith, Mrs. J. W. Smith and children of Abevllle, were the guests of J. W. Saxon and family the latter part of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. McBherson vis itod Mr. J. K. McPherson and family last Sunday. Little Wood row Teague who has been sick for several weeks does not improve as his friends would like to know. Messrs. Preston and .lohn Smith were business visitors in Laurens last Saturday. Misses Sarah and Lucy WalUfce of Belfast wno have been spending some time with their sister, Mrs. .lohn Har ris Wharton have returned to then home. Quite a number from the Lisbon and Beaverdam neighborhood spent last Friday on Reedy river enjoying a pic nic and fishing. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Drake were vis itors of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Teague Sunday. Mrs. Jennie May Thompson left for Hot Springs Sunday morinng. She was accompanied by her husband, Dr. Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson. We trust that the change and the healing waters may restore her to her usual health. The friends of Mrs. Percy Flnley and the littlo boy, will be glad to know are both doing well, Mr. T. S. Langstou and Mrs. H. C. Cunningham leave today for a visit to their sister, Mrs. Power of Owings. The whooping cough crowd are do ing very well and so far no new cases have fully develop except little Doll Henry has now a case. Mrs. Dennis Culbertson has receiv ed ? very interesting letter from her mother, Mrs. Bolt, who is now en joying a visit to the Land of Flow ers. The many friends of Mrs. Bolt will be glad to hear she is finding her visit so pleasant and helpful. She will stop over with Mrs. Culbertson on her return to her home in Ander son. The members ' of New Prospect Church are requested to meet at the ohurch Wednesday before the fourth Sunday to give the old church a regu lar spring cleaning. We trust to see a full regiment there with scrubbing brooms and soap prepared to do one full day's work. Miss Mamie Simpson, a recent grad uate of Winthrop accompanied by her brother and sister, were the week-end guests of their uncle, Mr. Jno. H. Power.
