The program of the Conference of the Common Good is rapidly ap proaching completion, though invita tions to discuss some of the topics have not been issued owing to the fact that the committee is endeavoring to llnd the very best authority for each topic. The committee has just received the acceptance of Mr. W. J. Shuford of Hickory, N. C, who wll ldlscuss "The Organization and Work of the Coop erative Creamery" at that place. Mr. Shuford is also engaged In the organi zation of a rural building aud loan as sociation to be conducted along the lines which have recently been dis cussed in the pre of the t?te. Mr. Shuford wll have a prominent place on the conference programs for Thursday. He will make a brief statement of the organization and method of his co operative association aud will then submit to a cross examination by the farmers and business men of South Carolina who may be seeking Informa tion on specific points. On the same day Mr. Clarence Poc, the editor of the Progressive Farmer, will describe. In detail the workings ol" cooperative associations which he has recently studied in Minnesota. Rev. W. H. Mills, the pastor of tho Fort Hill church at Clemson college, will discuss "The Part of the church in rural development." The committeo Is planning a conference of ministers for the 7th, at which this important topic will receive further discussion. Following the address of Dr. 1\ P. Claxton, United St'jfecs commissioner' of education, on Thursday evening, Dr. H. N. Snyder, president of Wofford col lege, will speak on "The Majecty of the Law." On Wednesday evening, which will bo devoted to the general topic "Homes of Our People," Rev. B. O. Watson, the president of the Horry In dustrial school and secretary of the .South Carolina Conference, will dls cuss "The Relation Between Home Ownership and the Prosperity of the 'Church.' ' Thursday morning's meeting will be devoted to "Education and Child Wei lar..*' In addition to those already announced for this program, Supt. s. H. Edmunds will discusss the topic "Building a Teaching Profession in South Carolina." Mrs. B. S. Mather, president of the Housewives League of Charleston, will discuss a "Home .Market for Home Products" Horn the standpoint of the league. Columbia, July 14.?For the murder on May 18 of Aaron Campbell, his son-in-law, and J. H. Campbell, the father of Aaron, in Lee county. M. L. Garrett, who has served terms on the chaiugang of his county an 1 In the state penitentiary, was this morning electrocuted at the state prism In the presence of some 35 witnesses. In the crowd were several citizens of the neighborhood where the crimes were committed. A brother of Aaron Camp bell was present to witness the legal atonement for the death of his broth-1 er and father. Garrett, who duriug the period of) his confinement at the ponltentiary has apparently faced death with Mr greatest fear, this morning walked into the death chamber and sat in the chair with splendid composure, though it was evident in the low tones that he used that he felt deeply the awful seriousness of the moment. His last request was:: "Kill me quick and don't hurt me any more than you can help." Garrett's deed was prompted by a| fierce jealousy. Hatred for the man who married his daughter caused him to go to her home and tin? dou ble, killing resulted. Garrett then forced his daughter to accompany him to the woods nearby, where he stayed in hiding for several days. Blood hounds fiom the penitentiary trailed the man and finally led to his place of hiding where he was captured with out hloodshed. *.*>**? LISBON LOCALS. Lisbon, July 14.?The farmers are getting up with their work and "lay-1 ing-by" time is at hand, but the crops are too small to think about that right now. Rain is needed, especially for up-land com. Young corn is not suffering as yet, but a good soaking rain would make thing look brighter for the farmers and incidentally for those who are in the "supply" bus iness. Speaking of this furnishing business, the farmer has It in his] power to remedy tills method to a large extent. We live in a grain County and to go to Lauems on Saturday and other days in the week and see the corn.
