WHALEY IS SWORN AS CONGRESSMAN Takes His Seat as First District Rep. rtvjeuative. No Opposition Yet. Washington, May 9.?R. 8. Whaley of Charleston, recently elected to suc ceed tho late George S. Legare In the house, was s vorn in today. When the house met this morning Represenative Finley, who had al ready made arrangements for Mr. Whaley to take the oath, appeared with the latter before the speaker's desk and in a moment Mr. Whaley was a full Hedged congressman, with all the rights and appurtenances be. longing to the office. So far as could be learned here when the house adjourned late this afternoon no steps had been .taken of ficially to bring the matter of alleged irregularities in the recent First dis trict election to the attention of the speaker and he 'house. When he returned to his seat a number of tho members who are to bo his colleagues shook hands with ?Mr. Whaley and welcomed him to the house. After that he retired to his ofllce and put in a big day's work an swering letters and attending to rou tine matters. Mr. W'haley has named John F. Laingan of Charleston as his secre tary. Mr. Lanlgan acted In this ca pacity while .Mr. Whaley was speaker of the house of represenatives of South Carolina. ****************** * * * WARRIOR CREEK. ? * ? * ****************** Warrior Creek, May 12.?Our com munity was saddened Saturday after noon when the death angel entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Burns and took from them their sweet little girl, Claramelle. She was only thir teen months old but was a bright, lovable child. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a host of friend* Little Elizabeth Owens is quite sick with pn< urnonia at this writing. Mrs. T. A. Drummond and children, of Lanford, spent Wednesday with her mother, Mrs. M. W. Fowler. Mrs. Uda Yeargin entertained the B. V. 1*. I1, society Friday afternoon. After devotional exercises, a delicious salad course was served. Miss Kobin Patterson and brothers, James and LcRoy, of Lanford, and Miss Caroline Fowler, spent Thursday night with Miss Loucile and Lamar Owens. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Knight and son, J. R.. spent Sunday with Mrs. Mary Brownlcc. Mrs. Sophie Stevens and Miss Mar garet Stevens were the guests of Mr. Ruf us Stevens and family Sunday. ?Messrs Fred Culbcrtson and K. B. Brownlee attended Mothers' Day ex ercises at Gray Court Methodist church Sunday. Gray, and little son, Lake, are visiting relatives In Green ville this week. Mrs. T. H. Babb spent Friday with her sister Mrs. J. W. Beason. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Babb spent Thursday with Mr. M. W. Gray and family. Several of the community attended the picnic at Babb's Mill Friday. Misses Edna Owens and Fcnoree Babb were the guests of Misses Alpha and Vena Martin Saturday night and Sunday. Mr. Charlie Brooks spent the week end with his mother Mrs. L. R. Brooks. Pal Roper had the misfortune of his mulo running away with him Sat urday night, but not much damage was done. Mrs. Laura Burnslde and little Da vid have returned from an extended I visit to relatives in the lower part of | the state. The girls of the graduating class were elegantly entertained Saturday evening at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Klugh. Master Robert Nabers of Columbia! visited his aunt. Mrs. R. A. Austin' Saturday ond Sunday. Mrs. Larry Watts of Lota was here) for Memorial Day. Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Todd and chil dren of Clinton wore with Mrs. Boyce| Saturday and Sunday. The closing exercises of the school last Thursday and Friday evening were interesting and were attended by a large audience. Thursday evening the Willard lit erary society had its exercises and| Friday evening the exercises were uf the graduating class. Those who fin ished the grades are Emma Lowe, Mary Hill, Willijo Austin, Leonora Leaman, Kittie Wharton, Mary and Annie Rasor and Ozelia Haimon. All the exercises were good and enjoyed by the large crowd present. Prof. Clinkscnle's address was fine. Memorial Day was observed here Saturday, May 10th. The exercises were held at the school auditorium. The decorations were pretty, large size portraits of Lee and Jackson were prominent. After the exercl'es at the j school building a lino of march was formed, school children in front, vet erans next, and then citizens. They | passed the monument and decorated It and then on to the cemetery ond put flowers on the soldiers' graves, large number of people attended and many beautiful flowers and wreathes of evergreen were used in decorating the graves. GRAYS SCHOOL. Gray School, May 12.?The farmers around here are wishing for a little rain as they have got some more planting to do. There are hundreds of acres of land around here that they can't plant for the want of rain. Miss Bell Davis and Miss Mamie | Merrell visited Miss Bessie Flncher] yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miss Emmie and Miss Hannah Rabbi are visiting their nephew, Mr. Pink Babb, today. Mrs. Sloan is spending the week end with her son, Mr. E. E. Sloan. Mr. R. M Garrett and Mr. George] Wango have gone to Greers on busi ness. Mr. .Jeff Green is very ill with ty phoid fever but we hope he will soon] recover. The boys of Grays school are ready to play any hoys around anywhere. Mr. Fred Nix and Mr. Clyde Garen went to Spartanhurg Thursday to get their ball suits. Pine Bluff school closes Friday, the 16th, with a picnic, at Watt's Brldgo on Saluda river, If the land is dry. If wet, will have the picnic at the Noffz hill, a quarter of o mile from Watts bridge. Everybody conic, and bring well-filled baskets. One of the actors of the play "Val ley Farm" that is to be given at Soul Chappel church announces that the play will be- given Friday night, the 16th sure. A 'nrge attendance Is wished, as the proceeds go to the schools of that community and Soul Chappel church. Messrs. M. G. Boazman and J. F. Griffin visited at Ekom Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. E. B. Milling of Greenwood, Is visiting Misses Mary and Elolse Brown. Mr. G. E. Boazman has completed covering Bathabara church. We are well pleased with his work and hope to get him to do some inside repairs. Mrs. Arthur Turner and little daughter, of Spartanburg, and Miss Beulah Turner from near Mountvlllo, visited Mrs. Dick Griffin and family Saturday. Quite a number from our commun ity attended commencement in Cross Hill Thrusday and Friday nights, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Horse Runs Away. While on their way to the city Monday morning, the horse being driven by Messrs. Clifton and Bas combe Brownlee, of the Warrior Creek section. <becamo -frigh med at ?be county tractor and ran away.
