In Ring for Governor, and Three Oth ers are Expected to. Columbia, S. C. Feb. 19.?Some body, somewhere, said that "the woods wore fuil of them," or words to that effect. However, that little statement tells tho story of the political situa tion in South Carolina. This is the year 1913 and four candidates have already announced for the year 1914. The candidates for governor who will be In the running are: John G. Richards, Jr. Mendel L. Smith. Charles A. Smith. Thomas H. Peeplos. Others who are expected to an nounce before the end of the week are: Richard I. Manning. Lowndes J. Browning. Qeorgo R. Rembort. Announcements are expected to fall thick and fast during the remainder of the legislative session. John G. Richards, Jr., is a member of the railroad commission, fie re sides at Liberty 11111, in Kershaw county. Mr. Richards was appointed a member ol' the railroad commission in 1911 by Governor Ansel. He was a member of the general assembly for twelve years ami was defeated for governor in 1910. Charles A. Smith is serving his sec ond term as lieutenant governor hav ing been elected to that position in 1910. He is a well known business man of Tlmmonsvllle. 11?' has many friends throughout the state, lie be. Hoves In prohibition. Mendel L. Smith is from Camden. ITc Is now serving his third term as speaker of the house of represent atives. He has made an able presid ing officer, lb- is a native of Black vllle, Ma in well county. George R. Reinheit is expected to announce his candidacy at any mo ment. Ho is a member of the legis lature from Rlchlaml county. Richard I. Manning is a well known and successful business man o." Sum ter. II?1 is well known in all sections of the stale?. Lowndes J. Browning;, of Union, was one of the big men in the last house. He made a fine record as chrA'rman pt the iways and means committee. He is a farmer and has many friends in all sections of the i state. Tin1 present governor has announc ed that he will he a candidate for the senate, lie will find able opposition in Senator 10. I). Smith, who has made a line record in securing legislation in the In't.erect of the farmers of South Carolina and of the south. There will be others in the race for the senate. Many things, however, sometimes happen in two years, Spnrtanburg I Herald. Thorinvell Orphanage Notes for Feb ruary. As there are above 200 South Caro. Una children in the Thorinvell Or phanage, and a hundred or more from other states and as these come from almost every county in the state, they are a subject of Inquiry from all over the state. Their friends will be pleas ed to know, that with the exception of a light epldemcl of measles, we have nothing in the way of sickness to trouble us, although the vaccination of a great many arms has made a number of the little people feol quite uncomfortable. Something like 200 applications for admission have distressed us through our Inability to receive the children at present The accommodations of the home are filled to the brim. It is true wo have a new cottage under construction, but that cannot be got ten ready for several months yet. In the meanwhile the stream continues to flow in. in increasing volume, while funds for those who are with us now are not what we ought to have. It is hard to have to tell a little child to wait, when the little one is abso'utoly without a home. The very warm winter has been an advantage to us, as some considerable construction work was goinc; on.
