TOBIAS DECLINES OFFER OF PEEPLES Unable to Act as Assistant Attorney General?Letters arc Given Out. Columbia, Dec. 29.?Ashley C. To bias, Jr., a member of the Charleston county bar, declined two months ago to accept the post of assistant attorney general of the State which was offered him by Thomas H. Peeples of Black vine, attorney general-elect. It was generally believed that Mr. Tobias would be tendered the position but this was not confirmed until last night when he gave out the correspondence between Mr. Peeples and himself. Mr. Tobias said last night that he believed that Mr. Peeples would ad minister the otllce of attorney gen eral successfully and, expressed his re great at being unable to act as bis assistant. Mr. Tobias and Mr. Peeples studied law at the University of South Carolina during two successive terms. Letter Exchanged. In offering Mr. Tobias the position as his assistant, Mr. Peeples wrote as follows: "Hon. Ashley C. Tobias, Jr., Charles ton, S. C. "My Dear Ashley: Inasmuch as 1 have recently been nominated by the Democrats of the State for at torney general and am desirous of promoting the welfare of the State, it will give me pleasure and 1 feel will add to the success of my ad ministration to have you accept tho position of assistant attorney general. "Let me hear from you. # "With kindest regards, I am "Yours sincerely, (Signed) "Thomas H. Peeples." To the above letter Mr. Tobias re plied as follows: j "My Dear Tom: I acknowledge with thanks receipt of your esteemed favor of the 21st inst.. tendering me the position of assistant attorney gen eral for the State of South Carolina. This is indeed an honor.lor any young Democrat and it is unnecessary for me to say that l appreciate it very highly. "I have delayed answering for the reason that 1 wished to give the mat ter my fullest consideration. It is with no little regret tl,nt t find bus iness Interests such that 1 will not be able to accept the position. "1 wish for your administration the greatest possible success. We sin-! cerely hope for her only a speedy re covery. C. T. Peden has returned from a trip to Greenville. Messrs. Cleveland Vaughan and Ernest Ba'bb, of Rabun. and Wares, re spectively were -he gttest? of friends in Hillside, Sunday. Our farmers are through harvest ing their crops. The Sunday school people of Hill side in conference assembled, Sunday, voted a new eleot.lon of officers. The officers elected were: James K. Rice, superintendent; W. Y. Weathers, as sistant superintendent: J. Andrew Peden, secretary; W. M. Tolllson, singing clerk. Little Sarah Peden Is much improv ed at present, we are glad to report. Tal mage Chapman of Columbia and brother, Bird, of Furman University, are at home for the Christmas holi days. Hillside holds more pleasure for the average man. All of Hillside is fast making ready for the Christmas holidays. Both rich and poor, old and young, idler and worker, all some forward at the annual Christmas holidays-to pay tri bute to Him who healed the sick and raised the dead and made possible their salvation. Then let us enjoy this Christmas holiday in u sober way. and remember it only as a momento of Him above. May God hasten the day when the gambler shall turn from his way, and the drunkard shall lind no comfort with his bottle, and the idler shall turn to a worker, and the true gentleman shall be known and recognized as such. Weathers. Having real rough weather indeed, roads are rough. A few years ago tho outside world know hut litlte of the wonderful op portunities of Hillside, but now it has been pictured to citizens of nearly ev ery state in the Union. The writer has received inqulires in regard to this place from the states of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Okla homa. North Carolina and others. Hillside has law-abiding citizens. It's land is productive, surpassing that of its neighboring sections. The whitt: population Is greatly in the majority Its negro population is very scant. And among our citizens hero you (Ind no oil, steel, or money kings?neither do yon find any kings of finance. So you see its just a little settlement, "nestled away among the hills," where tho people are workers instead of idlers, and if misfortune comes their way they have the grit to grin and keep going. Let's have a compulsory education al law in South Carolina. This com munity is in favor of such. There arc children here who badly noed school ing and they'll never get it unless, compelled by the laws of the State.
