About the best thing that the legis lators can do this year is to go down and transact routine business and vote to adjourn just as soon as possible. Greenwood and Laurens are ahou? in the same boat: Greenwood raised $30,000 to secure a boy's school ami failed to get i'. while Laurens raised $75.000 and failed to get a girl'.-, school. It would have been better for both institutions if they had ac cepted what was offered them. ? * * Several newspapers of cities in South Carolina have recently been "heralding the fact in flaring headlines that a large ice manufacturing cor poration had bought the plants In their respective cities as if it were a sign of progress and growth. Several years hence those same papers will probably be complaining of a corner on ice in South Carolina. ? ? ? ' It is to he hoped that this year will see n decrease in the acreage of the cotton crop in this county. The high price of the staple this past season is bound to cause an immense crop the corning season. The cotton crop in the larger portion of the south was very large this year and the price was Kood, so it is not to be expected that those who were satisfied with their" profits will think much about reduc ing for the coming crop. ? ? ? It appears as if over-eager lawyers, a few gosslpers and flash-light news paper correspondents are weilding too much Influence in the conduct of the Tillman "spectacle". While we hold no brief for young Hen Tillman, though It doea appear that he Is doing belter, yet It appears as if at every opportunity and sometimes without the opportunity, advantage Is taken to show him up in a bad light. If what Mr. H. C. Tillman says is true, and we do not doubt it. there was a direct attempt to misrepresent the at titude of young Til man's children to ward their father when they were sent to his home for the holidays. It seems as if Mrs. Tillman would do better to ;ake a little counsel to herself. ? ? ? Then, see ing, as others did, that Greenville had nn idea of lending assistance, Spar tanburg dropped her and turned to a source roady and willing to lend aid. Greenville can congratulate herself, however, that she had such an ardent admirer as Clinton to rally to her sup port and to offset the "bad" Influence of Spartanburg. Jones, Dec. 30.?In a recent "spell ing match" Master Jas. Graham, A. F. Cooper, Jones Graham. Omeca Cooper and Frank Jones were the winners. Dr. Childs of New York recently met Drs. Miss Maggie Beeks of Limestone college is at home for the holidays. Mrs. B. B. Martin of Fairfield and Mrs. G. W. Jenkins cf Columbia and Masters William and Walter are vis iting their parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. T. Jones. Brewerton Lodge No. 133 A. F. M? had a splendid dinner on the 2Sth inst and the following officers were in stalled to serve the ensuing Masonic year: W. S. Knight, W. M T. R. Jones, S. W. Walter Godfrey, J. W. B. L. The Christmas tree was a great suc cess. Hon. J. F. Morrison was master of ceremonle and our teacher, Mrs. G. L. Graham, had a very appropriate programme arranged for the pupils. The day was beautiful, the order per fect, the programme was well ren dered and all enjoyed the happy oc casion. Eichelber ger, of Marion, spent the holidays in the city. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Clarke spent the Christmas holidays in Richmond with friends. Mr. Sain Dorroh, of Woodruff, spent Christmas in the city with his mothei, Mrs. W. T. Dorroh. Mr. John Wright, of Spartanburg, visited his father, Mr. John X. Wright, during the^ holidays. Dr. and Mrs. Albright and children spent several days of last week in Clinton with relatives. Col. L, E. Burns went to Spartan burg yesterday to look after Red Iron Racket interests there. Mr. Jack McCravy went to Green wood Friday nicht to attend the an nual Christinas dance. Miss Lizzie Milam returned home Monday after visiting Miss Clara Dav enport for several lays. Mr. Gary Eichelberger returned to Winston-Salem Monday after a pleas ant visit to nis relatives. Mr. James Watkins, who is now lo cated in Anderson, spent several days here during the holidays. Col. J. C. Burns, of Greenwood, snent Sunday in the city with his brother, Col. L. E. Burns. Miss Nona Sanders, of Camden, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. San ders on South Harper street. Miss Lizzie Lee Milam spent several days of Christmas week as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sexton. Rev. G. M. Sexton and family, of Inman, arrived in the city Friday to spend a few weeks with relatives. Mr. Albert Toague spent several days in Greenwood last week, attend ing the dance there Friday night. Miss Lola Anderson; who is teaching school In Honea Path, Is spending the holidays In the city with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Willis, of Gray Court, were visitors at the home of Col. and Mrs. L. E. Burns Saturday. Mrs. J. C. Philpot, of Columbia, Is vl?ltlng relatives and friends in the city and in other parts of the county. Miss Melle Bolt spent the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Bolt. She is now teaching at Pomarla. Misses Aurie and Virginia Lancaster, of Columbia, were the guests of Miss Charlotte McGowan several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Master Harry Thames, Jr., of Char leston, has been spending several days in the city as the guest of Master Hugh Alken. Miss Ella Bearden, of Enoree, pass ed through the city Thursday after spending a part of the Christmas hol idays in Clinton. Misses Ina and May Little have re turned to Greenville after spending several days here with homefolks dur ing the holidays. Mrs. J. P. Simpson and Misses Mary, Lucia and Annie, are spending the holidays with Dr. Knox Simpson, in Jacksonville, Fla. Miss Mary Bell Fuller, who Is now teaching at Langley, is spending the holidays with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Fuller. Miss Nellie Bobo. of Cross Anchor, after spending several days In the city ns the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sexton, returned home yesterday. Miss Isabell Ashmore, Miss Fannie Cason and Mr. Frank Ashmore of Greenville were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Poole for several days last. week. Mrs. Jones Fuller, of Greenwood and Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McSwain, of Greenville, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. McGowan several days last, week. Mr. Ixjyd C. Langston, of Carolcen, N. C.i came down Wednesday and spent a few days with his father. Mr. J Lee Langston, and family, during the holidays. Dr. and Mrs. O. B. Mayer and chil dren, of Newherry, and Dr. and Mrs. O. W\ Leonard and children, of Spartan burg, spent Christmas week with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Jones. After (pending a year in (ho statu of Oklahoma, Mr. T. W. Barksdale, son of Mr. W. H. Barksdale, of the Highland Home community, has re turned home. He states that he is glad to get back Into the old county again. Mrs. T. J. McAllister and children arrived this week from St. Matthews to join Mr. McAllister who is manager of Davis-Roper Company's dry goods department. They will live in the'; Nelson home on Hampton street. Mr. McAllister has made many friends dur ing his short stay here and all are delighted that he has moved his fam ily to Laurens. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. \V. J. Sweitenberg, Messrs. R. G. and \V. P. Smith. H. P. Workman and J. E. Senn composed a party from Kinards that passed through the city yesterday on their way to Spartanburg to be pres ent at the marriage of Mr. C. M. Smith, of Kinards. to Miss Carolina Smith, of Spartanburg. Mr. B. L. Jones was in the city Mon day, having come up from Newherry where he has been spending Christ mas. It will doubtless be welcome news to the school children to know that he has been spending a part of vacation figuring out when the session will end in the summer.
