BRINGS ACTION
TO GET CHILDREN
B. It. Tlllman, Jr., Mien Halt Against
Mrs. Lucy Dugas. Supreme Court
to Hear Case.
Edgefleld. Nov. 7.?B. R. Tlllman,
Jr.. through his attorneys. Tinman
& Mays of Greenwood, -naa Instituted
habeas corpus proceedings to recover
his children from Mrs. B. K. Tlllman,
Jr., who since she obtained a divorce
is known as Mrs. Lucy Ihigas. The
order signed by Chief Justice Gary Is
returnable before the supreme court
November 26. C. A. Mays came down
from Greenwood yesterday afternoon
and had the order formally served on
Mrs. Dugas. S. McGowan Slmklns
Will represent Mrs. Dugas.
Mr. Tlllman states that he Is a cit
izen of this county and Is engaged in
farming, having rented the Tlllman
place at Trenton for next year. Among
other reasons set forth for bringing
this action It Is alleged that Mrs.
Dugas contemplates making her home
in Ohio, which would not only take
the children from the Jurisdiction of
the courts of this State but would
make it practically Impossible for Mr.
Tlllman to see them. It Is alleged
that Mrs. Dugas alone Is not capable
or competent to raise the children.
Mr. Tlllman alleges that the chil
dren are now unlawfully restrained
from seeing their father, never being
allowed to visit him. He states that
he has only seen them three or four
times since they were taken from him
and then under the most humiliating
Circumstances, tie further states that
. he has made several attempts to ef
fect a reconciliation, all of which
? have been rejected.
Reference Is made to the fact that
I Mrs. Tillman obtained a divorce and
of the possibility of a second mar
rlage, which would subject the chil- |
?Iren to the treatment of a stepfather, i
Senator Tillman has made his afli- ^
davit that he has not seen the chll
: dren since he surrendered them to i
their mother three years; ago, and
states furthermore that his son has
? given up the drink habit and is lead
ing a sober Industrious life. About a
dozen representative citizens of Tren
ton have mttde affidavits to the effect
that they have known B. R. Tlllman.
Jr., for the past three years and that
he has been entirely sober during that
time.
As the order was not served until
late yesterday afternoon it was not
generally known until this morning
that the sutt had been instituted by
Mr. Tillman to recover his two little
daughters. Since It became generally
known the matter has been a leading
topic of conversation. Because of the
prominence of all parties and the
large number of friends who are in
terested the final outcotye will be eag
erly watched.
Conferred ?Ith Attorneys,
Mrs. Frances Pickens Dugas, form
erly Mrs. B. R. Tillman. Jr., came to
Columbia yesterday to confer with
her attorneys. De Pass & DePass, rela
tive to the attempt or B. R. Tlllman.
Jr., to recover their two children,
Douschka and Mary Stark Tillman, by
habeas corpus proceedings. She has
been ordered by Chief Justice Gary
to show cause in the supreme eour:
on November l'?; why the order should
not be granted.
Ora, Nov. ll. Mr. Eston Hembree,
the popular and Industrious young
son of C. C. Hembree, was accident'.y
shot and seriously wounded some dis
tance from his home here late Friday
afternoon while ho and his friend,
Miles Workman were hunting. Mr.
Baton, In some way tumbled In chasing
a squirrel. Not being near anyone
and not realizing the danger, assisted
by his friend, he walked home, calling
*.o Bd Garrott, a colored man, to get
?i physician at once. He continued
to hold.his nerve, not wishing to ex
alte the family and came in the door
smiling and told what had happened.
Medical attention was secured and he
is gettlpg along fine at thh writing.
No doubt., his friends will regret to
know of his condition, being liked.by
old as well as young. As a ball player
he Is widely known all over the eour .y
and all who-know him will hope for
an early recovery from his wound.

two more senators to the certainties
in the Democratic column and those ;
from Nevada and .Montana seemed to
favor two more. These added to the '
43 others holding over, already elect
ed, or assured of election, brought the ,
Democratic forces up to 47, within
two of control.
The personnel of the new senate !
will show many of the well-known vet
ernns, with a large infusion of new
blood. Among the prominent sena- j
tors holding over are Root, Lodge, La i
Follette, Gallinger, Penrose, Clapp,
Culberson, Kern, O'Gorman, Rayner,
Shiveley and Hoke Smith. Others re
elected or likely to come back include
Senators Bacon, Tillman, Borah, Nel-'
son, Simmons, Martin, Bankhead, Da
vis and Owens.
Among- the most prominent of the
new men who already have been chos
en are Ollie James, Kentucky, and
Joseph E. Ransdell, of Louisiana, both
present members of the house, and
both Democrats.
Mr. James succeeds Senator Kay*
ner, and Senator Ransdell, Senator
Murphy J. Foster. Former Governor
Vardaman comes as the successor of j
Senator Leroy Percy, of Mississippi,
and former Representative William
Hughes as the successor of Senator
Briggs, of New Jersey, Representative
G. W. Norris, of Nebraska, will prob
ably succeed Senator Norris Brown.
The Progressive Republicans who i
were candidates for the senate and
whose successes seems assured by the
election of legislatures in sympathy
with them are Borah, of Idaho, and
Norris, of Nebraska; Kenyon, of
Iowa, and Sherman, of Illinois.
Later returns did not diminish the
heavy Democratic majority in the
house of representatives, but they did
play seesaw with "Uncle Joe" Cannon,
and finally left him defeated by a ma
jority of 600.
Gillette, of Massachusetts, probably
will succeed to Cannon's position of
senior Republican member on the ap
propriation committee.
GEORGIA FOR WILSON.
132 Out of 146 Counties Go Demo
cratic.
Approximate reports from every one I
of the 146 counties in Georgia show
that the Democratic voters of the state
rolled up a majority of 35,000 for
Woodrow Wilson over the combined
i vote of Roosevelt and Taft.
This means that he received the big
gest majority Georgia has given any
candidate for that office.
Not only did Governor Wilson re
ceive a record vote, but he carried
more counties than have gone Demo
cratic in the last half-dozen national
elections. Out of the 146 counties in
the state, 142 gave clear majorities
for Wilson, 3 went for Roosevelt, 1?
Gordon?is doubtful, with the indica
tions that it will give a slight plural
ity, to Wilson, while President Taft
brings up the rear with not a single
county after his name.
The seventh congressional district,
which for the past two national elec
tion's has boen strongly Republican,
Roosevelt and Taft carrying a ma
jority"-of the counties over Parker and <
Bryan in those years, this year rwung
beck'into the Democratic column.
Polk, county goes Democratic for the
first time in 60 years. .
