C, May 30.?Curtis W. Spence, an employe of tbo street rail way company at the substation on Assembly street, pumped five bullets into Robert L. O'Pry, an Insurance col lector, last night ana then told the ofllcers who arrived later that he did the shooting. The whole affair was ! over in a few seconds and thost who heard the shots gathered to look at the dead body of O'Pry after Spence bad been taken to the pollco station by the officers who sent In the call and those on duty at the station who I heard the shots, Just one block away. Domestic troubles aro said to be the cause of tho shooting, according to Ofllcer Davis, who know the men and heard of previous qwnrrels. The fact that both were put under peace bond by Recorder Verner Is a part of the record, as is tho fact that O'Pry and his wife were separated. The shooting occurred about 8:30 o'clock on west Lady street, near tho office of tho Southern Express com pany, about a half block from Main street. According to the testimony of witnesses secured by tbo police and by Coroner Walker, three shots were llred In rapid succession and then two more, tho shooting being done with a Colt .3S calibre pistol. The first shots were so quick that Ernest Wlx, who was in the express office at the time, and rushed out, saw O'Pry fall, heard him cry out and saw Spence lire sev eral times afterwards, at the same time warning others to keep away. Thos. Norton of the city board of health force and Officer Irby reached the Bcone Immediately, spence re marked to Norton: "I did it. Watch that knife by his side and see that no one gets it." Wix says thai Spence continued to snap hr.i pistol after it was emptied. Spence was carried to the station at once and O'Pry's body was removed to McCormlck's under taking establishment later. The in vestigation started at once. Tio. police and coroner learned that O'Pry and Spence had been placed under peace bond by Recorder Ver ner alter a fight between the two. Since then, according to the police, the two ha\o not met, but O'Pry, who is an Insurance collector, left the city for several weeks and on his re turn shadowed his house. Last night the two met and the llvinc, witness to the conversation that took place be tween the two Is Spence, who is In the city Jail, the charge of murder being entered on the docke?, against him. There was a bunch of keys in the hands of tho dead man and a small pocket knife at his side. Coroner Walker said lust night that he would bold the inquest some time today and examine a number of wit nesses who arrived alter the shoot ing occurred. These include W. W. Bailey, who says that Spence told him to stand back, after the shooting took place. Thos. Norton, who as sisted in the arrest of Spence; Dr. S. .1. Peake of Cross Hill, who saw the shooting from Iiis chair near the corl dor of tho Jerome hotel, Efnoal Wix, and several others. At the city jai! last night Spence asked Coroner Walker if O'Pry was dead. He had no statement to ma'ce. Very little is known of either except that Spence has been emnj ;/ed by the street railway company or some time and O'Pry has been with an insurance concern.
