Martin, being called lu preach the funeral of Dr. Pinson, of Cross Hill, last Sunday, his place was filled by his son, Guy, of the Louisville Theo logical Seminary, and from his ser mon, which was his first, we bespeak for him a bright future. Mr. .Joe Smith, and friend, Tom Bolt, of Laurcns, spent a few days with homefolks 'ast week. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cannon were with their parents from Saturday un til Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Walker were in Laurens shopping last Thursday Miss Mamie Fowler Is at homo again after several days' stay with her aunt Mrs. Fred Franks of Harksdale. We have Just learned that Mr. Bar ber Jones' little grandson, who has been very sick in Hock Hill seems to be some better today. We are sorry to hear that Mrs. Thad Martin does not Improve as her friends would like. Mr. Ed Teague is all smiles, anoth er voter has arrived at his home. Mr. and Mrs. W. Felts and daught er, Eunice, were shopping in Laurens Thursday, also Misses Mamie and Nannie Fowler, Mrs. (5. O. Teague and Miss Annie Hawkins. Quite a crowd from our berg at tended the picnic at Jones last Fri day. Among the number being Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Smith and family, Mr. I Asa Tongue and Miss Minnie. Mr. and Mrs. G. (). Teague visited Mrs. Teague'a parents near Heaver dam Sunday. Misses Lizzie and Joe Walker visit ed their little friend, Louise Saxon, Sunday afternoon. PLATFORM ADOPTED AT STATE CONVENTION ThePlatform Guarantees to Every White Voter in the State the Rights of the Primary Election. Columbia, May 17.?Condemning the republican high tariff and other repub lican principles commending demo cratic tariff, for revenue only, and other democratic principles and op posing any restrictions of the demo cratic primary, the platform of the democratic party in South Carolina was reported to the state convention shortly after 2 o'clock Thursday morn ing by the committee on platforms und was adopted by vote of the conven tion. Mr. W. F. Stevenson was chair man of the committee and it consisted of one member of each county delega tion. The platform favors the guarantee to every white voter in the state the rights of the primary election, it de clares for farm demonstration work and favors the extension of the school system. The committee on platform filed the document With the secretary, Mr. Jas. A. Hoyt, of the convention, but Thurs day morning he was unable to allow it to be used for publication. The substance of the platform is as follows: That the democratic party of South Carolina do declare Itself opposed to the republican protective tariff. That it declare itself in favor of a tariff for revenue only, such as is ad vocated by leading democratic states men. That it commends ns worthy of praise the efforts of the present dem ocratic members of the national con gress to Bccure such a tariff. That it condemns the Aldrich mone tary system as being a money mon opoly. That It believes the expansion and contraction of the currency should be left to the people. That it declare itself in favor of the conservation of the natural resources of the nation, the preservation of the forests and the water powers for the benefit of the people. That It declare its favor of the farm demonstration work as now being conducted by the federal government. That It, condemn the republican pension grab, the recent increase in the pension disbursements. That It commends as worthy of the best welfare of the country the ox tension of the common school system of the Btates. That it guarantee to every white man the right of the primary election. Can* of Meggett's caused a sensation in polities! circles todoy by announc ing Iiis withdrawal from the race for sheriff, leaving Cu,?t. Martin with out opposition. Carr states In his let ter of withdrawal that he has deter mined not to stand for office because ho does not npprovo of the stand which was taken by the faction from I which he was expected to draw his chief support. He did not attend the county convention but he went to Columbia, on the Grace-Slnkler dele gation and he states thai he heard the arguments before the committee on credentials which convinced him upon reflection that the Bamwell convention was the legally organized meeting of the county democracy and that he does not feel that he can ap prove of the action of the other fac tion and he therefore determined to <iuit tho race at once, as it would be improper for him to remain longer as ? candidate of the Grace-Sinkler faction. The withdrawal of Mr. Carr Is the third to take place In the shrievalty contest. First L. C. A. Roessler was to make the race and it was determined by the political forces that he should give place to J. 1*. DeVaux and that the former should run for clerk of the court. Pressure was brought to bear upon DeVaux to quit and when he threw up the sponge, Carr was brought out, with the purpose chiefly of dividing the country vote where Capt. Martin lias always been strong. The politi cians would not talk about the mat ter today. It is probable that an opposition candidate will bo found by Capt. Martin's opponents, but the several withdrawals serve the pur pose of weakening the opposition to the incumbent.?The State. Tells Women How to Have Charming Hnir. Clemson College lias many calls each year for competent nun to act as judges at county fairs. On account of tho fact that so many of tho fairs are held at the same time, and as ve are 'making effort to encourage and assist these lairs, we would he glad to hear from the ofllcers of every county fair association in the State that ex pects to hold a fair this fall, and that want.; judges from the college to sec if dales can be arranged to suit. The Extension Division is now mak ing its schedule, as far as possible, for the .summer and fall, so we would like to hear from tho fair associations as soon as possible, so that plans can be made to furnish every assistance pos sible.
