Burgess and family, of London, Ark., have been In the city for several days visiting relatives. Mr. Henry Holder, now with the Standard Oil Company in Anderson, spent Sunday and Monday in tho city. Mr. Gus Beadle, an old Laurens county hoy who left here for Texas In 1866, has been in the county visiting old friends lor the past few days. Mr. W. P. Ijfisa' Thames,, who Is principal of the , Laurens mill kindergarten school, will take a special course in this kind of work before returning next year. Mr. and Mrs. L. T. H. Daniel of the Rrewerton section spent Sunday in the city to hear Mr. Daniel's brother, Dr. W. W. Daniel, preach the bacca laureate sermon before the graded school graduating closs. While In the city they wore the guosta at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Messer Babb. * LOCAL AND PERSONAL MENTION. Miss Frances Thames delightfully entertained the bridge club at the homo of Mrs. W. H. Gilkeraon Friday afternoon. Tables were prepared for sixteen players and - most enjoyable afternoon was spent. After a number of games wore played delicious re freshments of ice cream and cake were served. Eldson received the guests and led them to the register, which was pre sided over by Miss Estelle Buzhardt. Promptly at 9:30 o'clock Miss Helen Clarke began to play Mendelssohn's wedding march. James LIpscomb of Ninety Six, as best man, came in with the groom. The bride came in on the arm of her brother, Dr. H. R. Wright. When they were duly pronounced husband and wife, the old grand father laid asido his clerical dignity and, kissing the bride, gave the groom a hearty welcome into his family. Miss Clarke then played the Lohengrin inarch and the party repaired to the dining room. From the dining room the guests came back to the parlors and enjoyed punch served by Mrs. L. C. Grlce from a bowl buried in red rambler roses. Soon after this Mrs. C. P. Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. C. Mlnter, of the Southern Land Development Company, will' leave Thursday for McBee where he will go in the interest of his company, which owns an immense tract of land there. Mr. Mlnter expects to be ac companied by several Laurens county men who are interested In the excel lent prospects that the town of Mcllee affords. He believes that all necessary to be convinced of the bright futuro of their big settlement is a visit to the section and he would like for many substantial Laurens citizens to go with him. Mr. H. A. Sullivan who Is now in Columbia, will Join Mr. Minter for the visit. COUNTY POLICE SYSTEM. The following contribution appeared In the Elberton star, Elberton, cia., a short time ago and should be of In terest in this county: Editor Star: The mounted Rural Po lice System that hau been adopted by several counties In South Carolina, is reducing lawlessness to a minimum in the county districts. Fines collected from the law break ers who are run down by these offi cers, in many counties far exceed the salaries paid them. A few years ago tne county of Lau rens, South Carolina, employed two Rural Policemen acrrylng a salary of $000.00 each per year. The fines col lected from blind tigers, gamblers, etc., raided by these officers, during the year, netted the county $2,500. The following year two more police men were added to the force and now when any one seeks legislative hon ors, he dare not oppose this splendid system. We county folks right here in El bert county need police protection. In some sections of the county It Is almost unsafe for a lady to drive on the public highways. Drinking and shooting tlreains is holding full sway. Why -Mr. Editor. just last Sunday (the day we arc commanded to keep holy) a party of white men, some old fellows, some middleaged and .some boys just In their teens met in the woods not one mile from our little town for a beer drinking. Some be.-j came drunk, some gambled and oth ers raised a row and a fight was nar rowly averted. The Rural Policemen would keep In touch with the people. Ferret out the blind tigers, rnld the gamblers and be on hand at all gatherings whore their services are likely to he needed.
