Dolt is in receipt of the letter bolow, from Mr. J. P. Bell, a well known old Con federate veteran of this county and a loyal citizen. Mr. Bell had been called on the jury several weeks ago and ho sent In this letter asking to bo excused: Renno, S. C, April 16, 1912. Mr. John P. Bolt. Dear Sir: I am summoned as a petit juror to appear at Laurens C. H. on April 22nd. I have been a juror at laurens C. if. at different times for more than thlrty-flve years. I can recollect when we had a republican Judge, republican solicitor and a ne gro clerk of tho court. 1 have had to sit on the jury with a negro. 1 am seventy years old. I have had some rough times and have been In danger ous places. 1 remember reconstruc tion days, when our hands were tied with federal bayonets; when you could sleep more comfortable out In the open. I was at the rst battle of Ma nassas, at the Seven Days fight around Richmond. I was shot down at the second battle of Manassas, shot down again at Chancellorsvllle and was car ried from the battlefield each time by the ambulance corpB. I was at the battle of the Wilderness, fought eigh teen long hours in the bloody angle, at Spottsylvania. I was captured at the fall of Petersburg, was a prisoner at Harts Island, New York, came home June L'Tth, 1865. A few witnesses liv ing. 1 cannot hear as good as 1 would like to hear, to be a juror. Respectfully, J. F. Bell. Mrs. Susan Nance Passed Away. Mrs. Susan Nance died at her home In the city last night after a pro longed illness incident to advanced age. Tho body will be sent today to Cross Hill, where she formely liv ed, for interment this afternoon. Mrs. Nanco was 70 years of age and for many years of her life had been a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. She leaves three children. Miss Xenia Nance. Mr. Bd. Nance and Mrs. M. P. Williams, who have the sympathy of many friends. Greenwood Daily Journal. At Rocky Spring Church. The sacrament of the Lord's Sup per will be administered at Rocky Spring church next Sabbath. Thuyer to Make Addresses nt Oak Grove und Copelund school Closing. The closing exercises of Oak Grove and Copclaud schools will take place Friday, the 17th, when a picnic will be given at Davis Springs, a few miles east of the city. Besides a musical program, addresses will be made by Hon. R. A. Cooper, Supt. of Education Geo. L. Pitts and Rev. W. E. Thayer. The picnic will be given by the schools jointly and a largo crowd is expected to be present. The public is Invited to come and to bring "well filled baskets." RA BUN NEWS. Lisbon, May 10.?Tho farmers are making use of these days putting in cotton seed. We have been planting cotton seed and running a farm for years and this is the first time wo ever planted cotton seed in May un less we had to plant over. Plenty of farmers In this section have Just com menced to plant. Those that planted some before the last rains have a good stand. Wheat and oats are looking fairly good, and if the rains continue we think fall oats will be more than we expected. The out look for the fruit crop Is very fine. Miss Francis Smith, one of the teachers in the graded schcol at Jones ville will be at home next week. Miss Kate Holmes, of Ashcvllle, N C. College will be at home next week Cnpt. C. T. Smith made a business trip to Jacksonville, Fla., last week The Mitchell hoys will be at home from South Carolina university soon Hon. A. J. Smith is still on the im prove we are glad to state. Mrs. Fd. Fuller, who has been very sick, we are glad to say is up attend a*-' to her UbUal duties. Mrs. Eliza Fuller, Mrs. Mllam Mr B. Mllam and Mrs. Ballew have all been very sick. All are better except Mrs. Eliza Fuller who is very sick yet. Mr. Charles Mllam was up last week but has returned to Cheraw. Say Mr. Editor, can't we get out a few men for senate and lower house that will say "I am for Jones"? Hasn't it come to a pretty pass that a man has to get up and say "I am for Blease, he has to have some help or a coat tall to swing on, or I can't get there".. Mr. Cooper in Anderson. A rather small audience greeted the Bpcaker of the day, Hon. It. A. Cooper of Laurens, solicitor of the eighth cir cuit who made a very able and inter esting address on the right of the states to secede. Mr. Cooper was introduced by Mr. Qunttlebaum, com mander of the sons of veterans and at the close of his unusual and re markable address was publicly com plimented in a graceful speech by Dr. R. F. Hipp and family, have returned to their homes. Mrs. Dr. J. W. Beason and Miss Vivian Owens were in Greenville Thursday, shopping. Mr. and Mrs. m. w. Gray attended services at Bulah Sunday. Judging from the contents of the letter Yellman came from stock that has been famous In Kentucky horse annals for many years. The let ter follows: Stanford, Ky., May 3, 1912. Mr. BrookB Chlldress, Laurens, S. C. Dear Sir: Your letter to hand In regard to the performances of Yell man's ancestors. Dignity Dare, his sire was a great show horse. He was shown 14 times when In his 3 year old form, winning 13 times, second 1 time. As a model horse .he Btands In a class by himself. Ho has been shown In this class 18 times, winning 17 times, beaten onco by his own daughter. He has taken many premiums In the harness rings. Eagle Bird was one of the greatest saddle stallions that Kentucky ever produced. In the year 1893 he was shown through the grand circuit for saddle horses and won more money than any stallion out that year. He began at Stanford, where the "cards were stacked against him" and won 4th money in the $300.00 stake. The next week he won the $100.00 stake at Danville, defeating mares and geld ings. The next week lie was shown at Nicholasville, winning second money in the $100.00 stake, being de feated by his uncle. "Monte Crlsto". The next week he was shown at Ver sailley winning second money in the $100.00 stake, being again defeated by "Monte Cristq,". The next week he was shown at Lexington, won the $.",no.OO stake. The next day, he won the sweepstake, defeating mare and geldings, The next week he was shown at Bails, won the $100.00 stake for stallions. The next day he won the $l?0.00 stake for Btallions, mares and geldings, This ended his show yard career, as he had glory enough. He was never defeated by any horse that he did not in return defeat. The dam of Yellman is one of the grandest looking mares in Kentucky, she met with an accident In her ~ year old form and was never trained.
