Dial has been traveling overthe state during the past weeks in the Interest of his candidacy for the United States senate. Mr. Dial states that he is receiving a great deal of encouragement wherever he goes and that the prospects for election grow rosier each day. During the past week he has been covering the entire state but hitting it in spots just to see bow the wind is blowing. Charleston, Co lumbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, Sa vannah (Mr. Dial thlnkB be will poll a few Georgia votes) and other places have found hiin busy circulating among the voters. Mr. Dial Is very popular In Charles ton, as will be gathered by the very friendly Interview In The Evening Post of that city: N. B. Dial, of Laurens, one of the best known business men in the State, who has announced his candidacy for United States Senator, is a visitor in Charleston today, and he received a warm welcome from his host of friend here. Mr. Dial has not yet made up his platform In detail, but he said today that he would run on his record as a business man as a develop er of Industrial South Carolina. Mr. Dial Is of pleasing personality. He lays no claim to being an orator, but he possesses an inexhaustible fund of anecdotes and Is a vigorous speaker who has ideas abreast with the times, and who sees a great future for South Carolina as an agricultural and manu facturing state. If he has one hobby that Is dearer to him than any other. It Is to develop South Carolina's farm ing capacity by cutting large areas up I Into small farms, and promoting di versification of crops. As a successful farmer, banker, manufacturer, and real estate man, Mr. Dial commands the re spect of all who have the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was born In Lau rens county and has spent his busy life there making good at almost every thing he has undertaken. While not an i ofllce seeker in the ordinary sense nor a politician, Mr. Dial has served the people of Laurens three times as May or, and during Cleveland's administra tion refused a consulship to Switzer land. He has been a delegate to a Democratic national convention, where i he picked up many ideas of how the , big political game is played. Pioneer Cotton Seed Oil Man. His achievements in the industrial history of Laurens are noteworthy. He was one of the first men in this State to build a cotton seed oil mill and he built the second successful cotton warehouse, both of these plants being at Laurens. He started two banks In Laurens and has been a pioneer in water power development in his sec tion of the State. Mr. Dial firmly be lieves that if the water power of South Carolina were owned by the State and properly developed that the people would not be called upon to pay any taxes. At present he is a busy man. being president of the Enterprise Bank, at Laurens; president of the Home Trust Company; president of the Laurens cotton mill, president of the Reedy River Power Company, president of the Sullivan Power Company, of the Southern Land Development Company and of the Laurens Bonded Warehouse Company. He took a prominent part In promoting the Ware Shoals Manu facturing Company, which has a cap ital of a million and a half dollars and he built the Laurens glass works. These activities show something of the ability of Mr. Dial as a man of af fairs, and he believes thnt as a Sen ator from South Carolina he can bring to bear his business training In a way that will help this state materially. He proposes to go to the Senate to bring South Carolina more prominently to the notice of the business elements of the country nnd of the world. Confident of Election, It might be stated that Mr. Dial has aucceeded signally in his many busi ness enterprises because of his acumen nnd Indomitable will, and moreover, he is confident that he will be elected United States Senator through a live, well-balanced campaign thnt ho will conduct this summer, when he runs against Senator Tillman. Raised on a farm, and a practical farmer, Mr. Dial took to the practice of law when a young man, and for 30 years has been a good lawyor, as well as a leading business man of his coun ty. Today Mr. Dial discussed many Is sues of interest. He thinks that the Democratic convention this summer should select a candidate by a major ity vote rather than by a two-thirds vote, and he will push this principle in his campaign. He believes that many of the banking laws and the marine laws of the country are obsoleto and should be revised. Moreover, he thinks that there would be no panics if proper' banking legislation were enacted by Congress. Charleston Should Grow. Charleston, he said, ought to be come a great port, with the splendid nntural advantages she possesses. lie! was much interested today in a dis cusston of the plans Charleston has for developing her back country, and since he himself has successfully en gineered a plan to bring Bettlers of thrift and industry to Laurens, his opinion of Charleston's project was worth attention. He endorsed the hack country development of the chnmbor of commerce, and stated that, should he bo elected to Congress, he would work along these lines calculated to nromoto the very plan that had been taken up In Charleston. Mr. Dial did not have anything to say about Senator Tillman, but he stated that he thought it was time for a live business man to go to Congress and represent the people of this state, and he felt qualified to measure up to the standard of business ability re quired.
