Hughes will leave this morning for Columbia where he goes to attend the annual meeting of the State Medical Society. Mr. Wilinot Smith, a former resident of I.aureus but who now works at the Ware Shoals mill store, was in the city visiting Sunday. Mrs. H. K. Alken, Mrs. J. H. Tongue, Mrs. J. R. Little and Miss Kate Wright are in Orangeburg this week attend ing the meeting of the Kings Daught ers. Wilkes Dendy, of Greenville, was the guest of Senaca Sullivan the latter part of last week. He returned home Monday, accompanied by Horbert, who will visit him for a few days. Master Coyle Moore, who will repre sent the Waterloo high school In the contest Friday night, was a visitor In the city Saturday. He came up to try out his voice in the auditorium. Mr. E. W. Lock nor has arrived In Hie city from Williamson. W. Va., and take up Iiis duties a' once with ?W leining Bros., where he has accept ed a position. Bolt receiv ed tho Confederate pension money from the state treasurer and will bo ready to pay It out on and after the 24th of the month. He is unable to give It out at once, becauso a large amount of clerical work Is connected with the distribution of tho funds and this has to be dono before tho money Is taken from tho bank. The check for this county amounted to $8,175. WORLD-WIDE TRAVELER WILL LECTURE HERE Noted Author, Traveller, nnd Lecturer to (live Free Entertainment to Lau rens People Next Thrusduy Night. Messrs. S. M. & E. H. Wilkes & Company have Induced the world-wide humorist "Cedariue" Allen to come to Laurens on April 18th, next Thurs day, to give one of his lectures "Feel ings, % JAdks and Foreign Fllghtw." This firm is going to foot the entire bill for the lecture and invites all the people of Laurens to be present to bear him. It will be given In the opera bouse, beginning at 8:30 o'clock p. m. Mr. Allen is a noted humorist, au thor and traveler and his lecture will be confined almost entirely to sub jects of interest to any audience. He will give bis experiences and impres sions as a globe trotter and as a stu dent of human nature, interspersing his remarks with humorous touches j that are bound to be pleasing. The Jamestown (N. Y.) Evening Journal has this to say of him: "George Hoyt Allen, known as| "Cedariue" Allen, gave a most de light tjrnfyel lecture on "Fcdllngs, Folks and Foreign Flights" in thel auditorium of the Y. M. C. A. Friday evening. Those who have read "Itl Tickled Him", a travel book by Mr. | Allen, found that the same peculiar humor running through the book was also a distinguishing feature of the lecture. The audience was given the full bone lit of Mr. Allen's observations of life nnd customs in the Far East. * * He closed with a few words on! India, concluding with a story of a curio dealer who refused to sell ev en to the king of England on Sunday. The lecture was a good hour in lengthI and was entertaining and instructive throughout." Mr. Allen will also give a practical demonstration of the parcels post In foreign countries. I CROSS HILL NEWS ???????????????????-?3 ?<M?*r? Cross Hill, April 15th.?A good many of the patrons were present at the school auditorium to bear the speaking contest last Friday, to de cide who should represent Cross Hill at the county contest next Friday ev ening. Six boys made speeches as follows: Fred Coleinnn, "Chnrocter of Napoleon"; John Carley, "The Black Horse and its Rider"; James Koon, "Conspiracy of Catalino"; William Loaman, "Dedth of Copernicus"; Dow ey Nelson. "SpnrtiCUS the Gladiator"; Simmons Pinson, "Death of La Fay ctte". Prof Culbertson of Mountvllle, Mr. S. A. French and Dr. Klugh were the judges. They decided that Dewey Nelson must represent Cross Hill at Laurens. ' Dewey received a medal given by a citizen. All the soys ac quitted themselves splendidly. Their training is a credit to the school. The school here will close the 3rd of May With commencement exercises, a pro gram of which will appear later. Prof. Smith and his corps of teachers have had a successful school year. Every thing has moved on so nicely. There was a wild west show in town last Friday night, it attracted the us ual crowd. Mr. W. 11. Austin attended the mon ument unveiling In Columbia last Thursday. Miss Cleo Walker, of Laurens, vis ited her people here last Saturday and' Sunday. Mr. Wilkins, a young business man of McCorinlck, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. FL A. Austin Saturday and Sunday. Last Thursday was a great day in Columbia and this correspondent is glad he contributed bis mite to help build the monument to the Women of the Confederacy, The many men "who forgot the trials of their wives and mothers and did nothing" ought to be glad that others carried on the work to completion. This correspondent was not quite old enough to be in the war but remembers vividly the self denials, trials and sufferings, in sus pense and anxiety, for the boys at the front by their mothers and sisters. We think the monument a fitting and much delayed tribute to their faith fulness. It nlways seemed strange to me that so many "who had a heritage from patriot mothers were willing to let others pay the tribute." There will be an entertainment at the school auditorium next Tuesday evening, April 23, "Simpson's little brenkfast party", given by home talent all for the benefit of the school. Tho cantata "King of Israel", sung by the Laurens Choral Society at the Methodist church last Tuesday even ing was listened to by a large and ap preciative audience. The presenta tion came up to and far surpassed the expectations of all. Though it cannot bo said that It proved such a success as did the cantata "Saul," it was enjoyed immensely by the large audience. The solo work and the parts taken by the chorus were fault lessly rendered. No entrance charge was made to the contata, but an offering was taken up during the evening. A liberal re sponse was met with, a total of $42.65 being given. After the few little ex penses are paid, the net earnings will be given to the Kings Daughters. CANDIDATE'S CARDS For Clerk of Court.
