Mr. J. G. Guthrie and family have
returned from an extended visit to
relatives in North Carolina.
On April 1st some of the trustees
and citizens surprised the school chil
dren by giving them a big treat. A
number of trustees and citizens visit
ed the school and carried packages of
candies, crackers and many good
things (o eat. and then bad the teach
ers to give holiday. Quite a number
of the larger pupils played truant that
day as it was April 1st, and missed all
the good things the others enjoyed.
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gray, of Green
wood were Cross Hill visitors Satur
day. Mr. Gray is editor of the Green
wood Dally Journal. They are with
Mrs. Gray's father, Mr. Jno. W. Turn
er.
John Ball, a negro was lodged in
the calaboose Saturday night, and sent
to jail. Ball ran off, last fall and Is
charged with shooting another negro,
wounding him severely. He is impli
cated also in the burning of a tenant
house on the farm of Mr. W. M. Miller.
S. W. Lowe and R. 1'. Cole made the
arrest.
Misses Sara Fellers and Mary Mar
tin of Mountvllle visited Miss Connie
Martin Saturday and Sunday.
Mrs. Chase of Columbia was with
friends here Saturday.
Miss Blanche Pinson, tendier at
Youngs, spent Sunday with bor par
ents, Mr. nnd Mrs. P. S. PInson.
A few farmers have planted cotton
seed on small lots. Planting the seed
will begin In earnest the last of this
week and next.
Mr. Austin I.eaman, of Or eon wood,
was With his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.
H. Leaman, last Wednesday, his 21st
birthday. Mr. Hugh Leaman also

them at dinner that day.
Mr. John Miller of Whltmtre was a
Cross Hill visitor last Sunday and
Monday.
Mr. J. W. Koon, policeman, arrest
ed a negro Saturday here, who had

ville county last Thursday night. The
same negro was seen near town Fri
day as passed as a wild man. An
oillcer came yesterday and took him to
