Hill, April 1.?This corres pondent hones that Laurens county Will be well represented at the un veiling of the Monument to The Wo men of the Confederacy In Columbia the 11th of April and "pay tribute to those noble women who as It were suffered martyrdom for the Lost Cause." Nickels, an old Cross Hill boy and now a prominent citizen of Greenwood, was a visitor here last week. Mr. Joe lMnson of Greenwood vis ited his father Mr. John Pinson last Thursday. Mrs. J. 11. P?oyd of Vaughnville vis ited her dnughter, Mrs. Clarence Brooks last Friday. Mrs. J. G. eJnklns of Greenwood was the guest of Miss Annie Rudd and sisters, last Thursday and Friday. Mr. J. I. lustl and Mr. S. A. Leaman have done some line work with the split log drag recently. Mr. A. E. Adams has been on the job again. Mr. J. W. Koon received a message last Wednesday saying that a brother of his was killed that day by a freight train in Newherry. nlterment at Soul Chapel Thursday. The oil mill ginnery was kept pret ty busy ginning cotton last Friday. Several bales were taken home by farmers after having it ginned. lO^ic was not enough to tempt them. 30 or more bales were sold here last week at about that price. Rev. A. E. Spencer of Claussen. S. I^inford was in Laurens Mon day. O. I.. Lanford attended the Union meeting at Harmony church Saturday. Rev. Mr. Camac tilled the Methodist pulpit he-e Sunday. He gave an ex cellent sermon. Mr. John oJhnson brought his bride home Saturday. He married a Miss Michael from Newton. N. C. Mr. Charlie and Willie Drummond spent Saturday night and Sunday with their parents here. Mrs. J. S. Hlgglns in some better at this writing. Mrs. H. C. Shore's condition Is no better. Miss Otella Johnson spent Saturday night and Sunday In Spartanburg. Mrs. John Brook Is visiting at Mr. H. C Shore's. March 29.?Prices have advanced under the stimulus of n bin consumption, strong spot markets, a delay in crop preparations and buy ing by big people. Spot interests, some large Wall street operators at leust one wing of the Waldorf-Astoria party have been buying at times. Memphis and New Orleans operators have also bought. From parts of the south come complains that crop pre parations are over a month late. Spot markets have been almost uni formly strong under the pressure of a good demand. The exports this sea son are estimated as high as 10,500. 000 bales. In no season of the past has the total reached even the total opto the present time this season, j As for the domestic consumption It is put as high as 5,250.000 bales. The exports and domestic consumption are figured by the bulls as high as 15,750.000 bales out of a crop of 16, 200.000 bales, to say nothing of the hedges put out against sales of cot ton for some years ahead. Hence the bulls think the gigantic crop is no longer a thing to be dreaded. The demand for dry goods is increasing and prices are rising. The Lawrence, Mass.. strike is over. Labor troubles in other parts of New England are expected to be short-lived. The op eratives* wages have been recently advanced. Should the strenuous ef forts being made to settle the English coal strike prove successful, it will remove one gread obstacle in the path of the cotton manufacturing trade. Hulls think it will oe the signal for a further advance in raw cotton. They think that the great activity In the stock market and the rise in copper to 15MsC a pound are significant signs of the times, and that in any expan sion of trade the cotton Industry is bound to share. The receipts continue large. Speculation is sluggish. Some large Interests seem to be selling on bulges. Some think, too. that the consumption is being overestimated and that there will be a big visible stock in this country on September 1. Wall street bulls on Thursday sold out fully 50.000 bales and they also sold today despite rams of 1 to 3 inches in the eastern section of the belt where crop preparations are be lieved to be especially backward. But the cotton was well, taken. Big spot interests are believed to be still bull ish. The activity of the stock market ' has caused some selling out of cot ton in order to go Into stocks. Xabors and little sons, .lack and Williams, have returned to their home in Columbia, after a pleas ant visit with her mother, Mrs. Brooks Miss Melle Bolt, who has been teach ing the first, second and third grades so successfully, has returned to her home in Laurens. Owing to there be ing such a perceptible droping off of pupils the past week, two teachers were no longer necessary. Prof. C. P. Brooks of Ninety Six spent the week-end with his mother. Mrs. W. S. Bolt, and children vis ited Mrs. .T. R. Brownlee Friday. Mrs. Floyd Curry, and little son Cray, spent Wednesday with Mr. .1. N. Gray and family. Mr. D. D. Brownlee, was a business visitor to Laurens Monday. Mrs. L. R. Brooks spent Tuesday in Greenville, shopping. The Dletrlcs. magicians and enter tainers, at the Gray Court-Owings in stitute on the 29th proved a success. A goodly number from here attended, and all agreed that the Dletrlcs had some class as entertainers. So the candidates are ready for their appearance before the "dear peo ple."
