Columbia, March 10.?Tho first ses sion of the dispensary investigating committee was consumed In the ex amination of the members of the Ansel dispensary commission, Mr. W. F. Stevenson, former Oovornor John Clary Evans and Attorney General Ly on. All of the Ansel commission were bore for the examination except Mr. A. N. Wood, who is ill at his homo in Gaffney and was unablo to attond. The balance of the commission. Dr. W. J. Murray, chairman; Messrs J. Steele Hrlce, of Yorkvllle; Avery Pat ton, of Greenville; John McSween, of Tlinmonsville, have all been search lngly examined, and the testimony has shown that the commission, together with the Attorney General and his as sociates, took charge of a bankrupt dispensary and save the State of South Carolina some $500,000 as a result of the business acumen theso gentlemen possessed. The Ansel commission was composed of five of the very best men In South Carolina, men of honor and integrity and inspired by tho highest motives. They did their work with an eye single to tho best inter est of the State. I.yen's Efforts Rewarded. The examination last week proved again that Attorney General Lyon, in the face of tremendous odds, made good his campaign promises to run down the "grafters and unmoved by threats and not stopping when faced by odds which would have daunted a [ less brave and patriotic man, he went along in his course, showing up the frauds with which the old dispensary reeked and doing his part to bring to justice those who had taken part in the defrauding and cheating the State through overcharges, paying rebates and the many other lawless courses now a matter of history and which have been told on every stump and in every home In South Carolina. The examination so far has been a com plete and triumphant vindication of nil these gentlemen and impressed upon the people of the State the work which they did. The committee will resume its In vestigations next Thursday, at which time other witnesses will he examined. Everyone who In any way was con orned, or was supected of having been 'verned, or who Is thought to have any knowledge of any matters con nected with the old dispensary, will be brought up to testify. The probe will be thorough and the country will be ransacked for possible witnesses. The purpose is to make this investigation so complete that no other will be ne cessary or desired. Felder will be Called. T. B. Felder, the Atlanta attorney whose detective work uncovered the evidence which enabled the commission to recover the overcharges from the various liquor houses which had dealt with tho old State dispensary, will be subpoened to appear and tell what he knows. In sensational letters to the press last year he charged the Gov ernor of the State with having had dealings with tho old dispensary and he will be given an opportunity, not only to tell all this, but to present his proof and proof is what he will bo asked for. The investigating committee was created by the legislature at. its ses sion in 1911, in response to a mes sage from Governor Blease making certain charges against the then wind ing-up commission and calling on the legislature to investigate them. Sub sequently he vetoed tho Act creating the committee and "fired" the Ansel winding-up commission, appointing others to take their places. The Act was passed over the veto at the ses sion this year and the committee wns formed and ordered to proceed with the investigation. Blease Refuses to Appear. Govornor Please, when he "fired" the Ansel commission, charged them with Incompotency, and In the testimony last week tho members of that com mission denounced the Governor's charges as false and outrageous, anfl condemned him strongly because he | refused to appear and substantiate the charges he made against them. Mr. J. Steele Ikiee, a member of the Ansel commission, characterized Governor Uleaso as the worst Governor since Franklin J. Moses; nnd Dr. W. .T. Mur ray, the chairman of the Ansel com mission, said that Governor Mease "wasn't lit to brush our shoes,". Like expressions wore used in tho bitter de nunciation ho received at their hands. Governor Blease has refused to have anything to do with tho committee and said that he didn't want to be bothered with them.?News and Courier. To Mothers -And Others. Miss Maggie Sue McNinch visited friends at Trinity-Ridge. Mr. M. Moore of lionea Path is spending awhile with bis parents here. Mr. Jim Miller and Mr. Strlbbllng spent a while at liodgos last week. The school here closed Friday and Miss Jennie B. Wade, the efficient teacher, has returned to her home In Cross Hill. Miss Josephine Mooi'0 and Miss Min nie Miller have accepted positions in Greenville. Their friends regretted to see them leave. Mr. Ernest Moore has gone to visit his sister, Mrs. Watson, at Enoree. The Methodists are going to repair New Zlon church. Mr. E. E. Elmore will soon move his saw mill on tho church grounds. Mr. G. A. McThenion went to Lau rens Saturday. Watson, of Laurens, pas tor of Rush River and Mount Zlon Raptist churches, in this county, has decided to accept the call extended to him by the Raptist church at Simp sonvillo, Greenville county on the C. & W. C railroad, and will leave for ills new field some time In April. Mr. Watson has endeared himself very much to his people in this county, and they regret that they are to lose him as pastor, and be gives up the work with reluctance.?Newberry Ob server.
