If you have a large tuber, and you wish large flowers, then use a largo pot. If you want a dwarf plant, use a small pot. MONOGRAMS ON CHOICE FRUIT Clever Little Trick Performed by Past ing on Perforated Paper Before Apples Color. , A story comes from Oregon to the effect that tho big fruit growers in that section are now growing mon ograms on their choice fruit. It en hances their value In the big marketB In the east. It is claimed that a large grower of fancy apples at Hood River now placeB the mongram of a prom inent New York hotel on a large por tion of his crop. This is done by pasting perforated paper labels con taining the monogram on the cheek *t the apples while green. When tho Individual Brands of Apples. fruit colors In the sun the words are left In red on a green background, and the whole design has the appearance of having been stamped on In dainty Ink. The Best Grafting Wax. Rosin four parts (ounces or pounds); beeswax two parts; tallow one part; molted slowly In an Iron ves sel, putting In tho rosin five or ten minutes before the beeswax; and all completely mixed together by much stirring. In 20 minutes or so It will be thor oughly mixed, and a convenient por tion is to be poured into a bucket of cold water. In a minute or less it will be cool enough to tako up with the hands (which must bo greased with tallow) and pulled like taffy. When it becomes light yellow In color it Is done and can be mndo Into sticks or balls and put Into another vessel of cold water to harden. Other portions enn be treated in the samo way until all is used up. These balls, or sticks, of convenient size can be laid away until required for use. The Brown Slug. The little brown slug that defoliates the pear, plum and cherry trees during the summer season is ono of tho easiest of our Insects to control. No one need allow this Insect to do any serious harm to his trcs, if he will thoroughly use the remedy here given Steep two ounces of fresh white helle bore In one gallon of water, and use as a spray when the slugs are first seen. Stir the mixture often; or, better yet, have an agitator attach ment on the pump. Sometimes there Is a second brood of the slugs, neces sitating a second spraying. Norway Spruce. This Is the first attempt of the kind In New Knglnnd, but experi menters believe that the futuro supply of the denuded states may be replaced In this way. Whitewashed Trees. Testing Seed Corn Before Plant- * lug. * Seed corn which has been stored through the winter under ordinary conditions In South Carolina, is often thought to need no testing before planting. Hut the high price of land and the additional expense of replant ing the field demands that the progres sive farmer know more about the qual ity of seed that he is to plant. The proper time to make the germ inating test is about three weeks be fore planting, so that if any had ears are found in tho lot and discarded, the ears which nre to take their place may also be tested before the seed are placed In the soil. A convenient sized testing box for the average farmer Is one that Is 24 inches by ,24 nehes, and about 4 to 6 inches deep. This box can he made from six inch plank or a soap or starch box sawed down to the desired depth can be used. This box should have a layer of at least two inches of I wet sawdust packed tightly over the bottom. It will be found convenient to wet the sawdust In an old sack by letting (the sack containing the sawdust) soak In warm water for 20 to 30 minutes, so that the sawdust may have an equal moisture content throughout. Having completed the box, take a piece of white cloth, which should be a little larger than the box, and mark off one hundred squares 2x2 inches. Number each of these consecutively from 1 to 100, then dip this cloth Into a bucket of water and stretch it even ly over the sawdust. When the tester is complete, take the ears of corn to be tested and num ber each ear. Then tage six kernels from each ear. two from opposite sides of the butt, two from opposite sides of the middle, and two from op posite sides of the tip. See that no two kernels are taken from tho same row, and if the butt and tip kernels are taken one Inch from the end of the ear, this will be an average sam ple. Having taken the kernels from the ears, place them in the square which is numbered to correspond to the number of the ear. Allow no two of them to touch, place them withe the heart side up, and all of the tips pointing in the same direction. When grains from all tho ears have been placed in the squares which corres pond to the number of the ear from which they were taken, place another] piece of wet cloth on top of them and cover this with 2 to 3 Inches of wet sawdust. Then place tho box In some plnco where it will remain warm. At the end of four days dampen the saw dust again by sprinkling some warm water over it. At the end of a week the tester should be examined by care fully removing the sawdust and top cloth. The numbers of all squares which do not show six big healthy sprouts should be ascertained, and the enrs which have the corresponding numbers should not be planted. .1. M.
