ture of a bill to restrict the sale and
.use of cocaine. There was a measure
?on the calendar last year. Introduced
by W. E. Bode of Saluda, but it soems
that it did not become a law although

would like to see one built between
the two towns however.
The Use of Cocaine.
We haven't seen anything in the
legislature proceedings with referenc1
to the hill to prevent the sale of co
caine. Last year W. E. Bodle of 8a
1'ida introduced such a bill, but there
were so many things on the calendar
that it never became a law. The an
thor told ol a number of instances of
negroes made criminal by the use ofl
this drug.
The sale and use of this drug is
said to bo quite general In some parts
of the state?and in rural sections ut
that. It has an exhtllrnting effect ui -
on the user, followed by an
equal amount of depression This
calls for the almost continuous use of
the stimulant.
The person addicted to the use of
this drug loses nil sense of moral re
sponsibility and becomes a menace to
society. In some cities, (linguists of
low principle may be found who will
sell the drug for the immense profit
in it. The negroes who are the most
generally addicted, call the drug
sniff," for the reason that the dry
white powder Is sniffed into the nos
trils, causing insensibility to pain and
producing hallucinations. Many ro

?were cocaine.
The Laurens Advertiser and somo
of the other papers discussed the
spreading use of the drug by negroes
and wo thought the legislature would
be asked to pass a law severe enough
in its penalties to make the sale pro
hibitive.

crowd at Union church Saturday and
Sunday. Rev. Mr. Black gave Mb au

Cooper.
Among those who have been on the
sick list were Mrs. A. R. Thome, Mrs

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Odel's baby has
been critically ill with pneumonia, but
owing to tho good attention of Dr.
Cooper, and good nursing at home it
is improving rapidly.
Messrs. Carter and Warren Culhert
son. of tho Shiloh section, attended
Church at Dillon Saturday and Sunday.
Among those who have moved into
this neighborhood recently are Mr.
J. W. Blledgo and family. Mr. Henry
Pitts and family and Mr. Page. They
are welcome into this community.
Mr. J. D. Culhertson and family, of
Madden, were over for preaching Sun
day.
Miss Irene Cooper spent a few days
of last week with Miss Agnes Cooper.
Miss Alta Martin visited her sister.
Mrs. Ernest Hurts Saturday night.
Miss Minnie Caldwell is spending
awhile with her sister. Mrs. Mo! lie

Mr. J. A. Culhertson Bead.
Cross Hill, Feb. 5.?Mr. J. A. Cul
hertson. Magistrate at this place died
Saturday night. He had a throat trou
ble and Buffered an operation at the
hospital a few weeks ago. He felt
relieved for a few days, but the trou
ble returned and death ended his suf
ferings. Mr. Culhertson was a Con
federate veteran. having serve
through the war. He was a faithful
member of the Baptist church for
many years. He leaves a wife. tw<
sons and four daughters, all of them
grown people, and several grand chil
dren to mourn. Interment at the cem
etery here today.
