BIG FIRE LOSS IN CAPITAL CITY Over Quarter Million Fstlmuted Dam age by Fire in Wholesale District of Columbia. Columbia, Jan. 5.?Fire wliicb In volved a property loss between $250, 000 and $400,000 swept over the south ern block between the Southern rail way freight depot and Lincoln street on Gervais street this morning. The buildings were owned by the Glbbs Machinery company, Armour & Com pany, Mrs. L. B. Oozler and B. A. Beall & Company and J. E. Young & Co. The land on which the buildings were lo cated was leased to the Individuals. The fire did not confine itself to Gervais street but the wind switched the Hamcs to the south and a num ber of small buildings and stables 1 were burned in the rear of the block, j The shops of the Columbia Machine Co. were also burned. The Harnes were discovered at 10 o'clock on the second floor of the Gibbcs company offices and spread rapidly eastward. The two buildings occupied by this well known machin ery and supply concern were destroy ed as well as the buildings occupied by the Armour Packing Company and the Southern states Supply company. These were the principal losers, al though other smaller concerns with quarters in these buildings suffered more or less from the fire. To Rebuild at Once. Automobiles to the number of Is or 20 wore burned in the motor de partment of the Gibbes establish ment, several other cars bring saved. The fire wll result in the erection of several creditable fireproof structures In the wholesale district. F-limaf ? in' Losses, A revised .?nid careful estimate of the loss from the lire which swo| . almost an entire block of the whole sale district here today places the 1 losses at about $225,0110. with about $1S0,000 insurance. As near as can be estimated the losses are ns follows. Gibbes Machinery company, with branches in Charleston, Wilmington. Spnrtanburg ami Augusta, is Cue heaviest loser, the estimate on their loss being about $125,000 with about $$0,000 insurance. The Southern States Supply Co., loss about $50,000, with about $53.000 insurance: II. G. Werts & Co., loss about $15,000 with about $10,n0i) insurance: Armour & Com pany, loss about $11.000, said to be fully insured; the Gay Ola Co., loss about $:'..000. insurance about $500; Moffatt ci Dupree Co., loss about $2, 000, covered by insurance; T. R. Roaches Provision Co., loss about $2, 000, covered by insurance; Dr. F. S. Farle's drug store. loss about $1.0U0, not insured; Swift & Co., loss about $1,000. thought to be fully insured. An engine in the Serhoard yards is said to have been badly damaged. The telephone and telegraph com panv also sustained some loss, the wires having been burnt out in this section by the fire. Other minor losses such as tenant houses, were sustain ed but it is thought that $250.000 is an outside estimate of the loss from the fire. The fire was gotten com pletely under control this afternoon and only smouldering embers mark the spot where the conflagration rag ed this morning. LOCALS FROM DIALS. * ************** Wednesday afternoon the 27th at o'clock at the home of her parouts, Miss Lila Simmons and Mr. Smith Boyd of Greenwood were married. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. P. Attaway, pastor of the bride. The wedding was a quiet affair, only the immediate family being present. The bride is the charming daughter of Mr. 11. Y. Simmons of this place, and is a popular young school teacher. Mr. Boyd Is a successful farmer and bus iness man of Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd will be at their home in Greenwood after January 1st. After a vacation of ten days the school at this place has resumed Its regular routine. Miss Magige Harrison has returned from Duncan where she spent the hol idays. The H. Y. P. U. entertainment at Rabun was a success, and the young people deserved much praise by tholr well rendered program. Mr. Walter Gray has returned to Hnzelhurst, On., where he is in bus iness. Mr. .!. "I was on my way to business on tho twenty-fourth of December and was figuring out that this was not to bo the best Christmas I had even spent.
