Jones. S. C, Sept. 11.?The recent
Sunday School Convention at Ware
Shoals was quite a success. Presi
dent S. C. Hodges presided very grace
fully and all of the proceedings were
interesting and instructive. The ad
dresses by Miss Vandlver, George C.
Hodges, Hon. C. C. Featherstone and
Revs. Greene, Porcher, Hughey, and
Dallas were eloquent and inspiring.
Arthur Hampton, a worthy colored
man and good farmer was the first one
lo market, a bale of cotton.
Dr .Jones has a good cow for sale.
Messrs. J. A. and W. H. Hill recent
visited their cousin, Mr. John

Mr. Wilmot Smith has returned from
a visit to Columbia and Laurens.
Prof. W. P. Culbertson of Mountvlllc
delivered a very forceru; and eloquent

day to a large and appreciative audi
ence. Prof. Culhertson was the first
teacher of the Jones high school and
after his address he was cordially
greeted by his former patrons and pu
pils.
Messrs Mendoza Higgins, of Cokes
bury, Coby Henderson of Hodges, Mr.
and Mrs. Samuel Cooper of Algarys.
Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hodges, Miss Nona
Rlley, G. 13. and Walter Riley of Rlleys
came to hear Prof. Culbertson.
Mr. Billy Cochran has accepted a' po
sition with Besch?m & Riley.
We are indebted to Mrs. Jackson
for some extra large tomatoes.
Drs. Neel and,Lander of Greenwood
honored us with a pleasant call last
week.
Messrs Beemau Alexander of Green
wood, Tludgens, of Laurens and Allen
of Anderson were at Ware Shoals last
week.
Miss Lona Riley has returned to
her school In Laurens county that she
has successfully taught for the past
three years.
Rev. Homer Owlngs. a former pupil
of the Jones high school, but for many
years a missionary in China will
preach at Ware Shoals on the third
Sunday at 11 a. m.
Mr. Walter Riley's handsome cot
tage Is Hearing completion and will
soon be ready for occupancy.
Messrs .Deacham and Itlley's gin
nery is in lirst class condition and is
largely patronized.
Mr. Ed. Gaines, the genial cotton
buyer at Ware Shoals, Is paying the
highest price for cotton and will con
tinue to maintain a good market.
There was a delightful lawn party
at the home of Dr. W. T. Jones on the
evening of the 7th Inst.

A correspondent thinks he has dis
covered tho shortest shop front name
lu London. It is above a shop in
Gray's Inn road?simply S. Be. There
is some sort of accent on the "o," but
the sign writer seems douhtful about
it. Can you beat that name for brev

1 have just read the Holstein- Frle
slan Cattle article In your issue of the
6th and accept the silo effort as good,
but believe that the cattle remarks
are misleading. Holsteln-Friesian cat
tle come to us from Holland, a region
of long and coarse grass, with Influ
ences generated in this grass well in
stilled In its cattle. I feel that south
ern Hoistein-Friesian statistics will
show that it has taken unnatural cf- |
fort to maintain even a normal grade,
much less get one hundred and twen
ty pound of milk a day and four and
one half pounds of butter from one
Binglo cow. Very naturally official
records like this put a milk and but
ter fever upon the dairyman and na
turally he figures for that extra care,
feed, etc., of seven or eight so-called
scrubs against one Holstein-Fritsian.
And so it might be, if an average of
nine and one half pounds could bo
guaranteed for eleven months out of
the twelve. But statistics say "No.
it cannot be done." None of the hip
herd shave maintained their official
records made in their own clime when
brought South. And then too, I had
not recognized the Hotstein-Friesians
as a "dual purpose" cow, but a "top
notchor" in her clime, yes a number
one, absolute. She Is a dairy cow and
not a beef cow.
