Few men even in that high calling <it' the ministry, have ever served their Cod and one people In one work in ono locality forty-seven consecutive years. It would be hard in a search of this entire country to find a minis ter who had entered an almost unde veloped Held just in the bloom of his young manhood, at the age of 22: de voted bis every minute *>f life to the ripe old age of tilt years in and for that particular part of a great universe, where he had chosen to cast the lot of his life; not because there was never an effort to induce him away, but because his entire being hud be come wrupped in and a part of what he had surrendered himself with, it Is an illustration of the greatest of all great love; perhaps as near real puri ty as the human clay approaches. It Is the record of Dr. \V. P. Jacobs, of Clinton, South Carolina, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of that city, known all over the Southern country for an even more tender calling than that if ministering to a flock of good people in an ordinary church work. But it isn't a surprising record at all, to one who really knows Dr. Jacobs for the grand, lovable and loving Chris tian gentleman he is. And. now in the fading winter of his life he Is laying .aside the pastorate on which he huild ed all that has developed under bis guiding hand?Dr. Jacobs resigned his pastorate last Sunday morning at a meeting of the congregation in Clinton. He was not by any means the founder of the Presbyterian faith in that part of South Carolina, but he, very probably, has developed and spread the faith more in that section than any other one minister of the Presbyterian church hits in any other one portion of the state; very likely more so than in any other part of the entire South. His record, his endless devotion?-because in making him "Pastor-Emeritus'' of the church, he will continue his connection until his death?can't but go into church his tory as one of the most remarkable in whatever story may be written of the Presbyterian faith in the future. Dr. Win. P. Jacobs took charge of a feinall country church when he was Just 22 years old, the membership at that time being barely sixty-three, and the church the only one of the faith in that section. Today there Is In its place not only the magnificent edifice of which lie was pastor until last Sunday, with a congregation of more than four hundred, but out of that original congregation, and through the early efforts as well as those of later years, by Dr. Jacobs, is the sec ond Presbyterian church of Clinton, with a large congregation, and thcjl Thorn Well Memorial Presbyterian church. Yet, in this close intimacy ii< h Dr. Jacobs has had with the pt three evere e;alnst generations' his greatest and perhaps his most lasting work anyway, Mic tenderest of it?has been other than that performed as pastor of his church. He has been for years, and is still, the active head, the founder and real maker of that institution which has been a home for so many homeless, whose standard of training and rearing has given to the world many noble young men 4and women who could not have been entirely so but for it; and which will in future continue the work he has so will organized ?the Thornwell Orphanage. Though him it has been the mother, father and family in mniiy and many a sad i case.
