.FLOATED OX WRECKED BRIDGE. 'Contractor Balentine und Three Col ored Workmen Fall With Bridge Upen. Aa the result of the scaffolding giv ing way. the middle .span of the new bridge being built across Saluda river at the old Rasor bridge site, was dis lodge (1 ami carried down into the swol len river, one afternoon last week, to gether with Contractor David f. Dal eutiiic and three colored workmen. Mr. Balentine managed to cling onto the raft, and after floating about two miles succeeded in getting to the shore; over the protest of Mr. Halen tino Tom Bailey, colored, after stay ing on the raft for half a mile. Jumped Into the water and attempted to swim ashore but he quickly sank and was drowned. The other two escaped by j swimming out immediately after the cruuh came. Htyqnd shock and exhaustion, Mr. Balentine did not Buffer any special injury, and on .Monday of this week lie was in the city on his way from Spartanburg where he has be< n spend rif .he time since the accident with his family. The collapse was caused by the main : supports of the scaffolding being un inderiuined by a seven foot rise of the Pllvor. and the crash occurred jusl as the men were prparing to stop work foi th nigh:. Mr. Balentine and his men were on the middle span at the time, the cords having just been placed and a temporary platform made for the workmen and material, and of course they went down with the whole thing.
