In order *o bring to the attention of the public, the transformation which lins been brought about In the Lau rciis Cemetery during the past few months and particularly to interest the rising gentration In this most com mendable work. The Advertiser offers the following prizes to pupils of the city graded schools: To the successful contestant, hoy or girl, between the ages of 12 and 15 years. $.>; between 10 and 12 years, under 10 years, The contest will consist of filling in the blank Bpaces in the article printed below; and each contestant must have his or her essay in the hands of the "Contest Editor, I.aureus Advertiser." Lau r ens, s. c. by noon of July 15th. The printed portion will be copied 111 the handwriting of the contestant and the part 111 led In will be similarly written. Kssays will be written on hut one side of each sheel of paper and will be signed, not with the names of the contestants but, with 1101118 do plume or secret signs; and. accompanying each such essay, will be a separate sealed envelope in which will he a statement of the said nom de plume or Blgn together with the contestant's real name, age and St reel address. The letter conveying this information will also contain a cer tificate to the effect that, wllh the ex ception of discussion and general ad vice, ih.' contestant received no as sistance from any one -that is to say, that the language as well as the thoughts expressed are in fact tlit con test ants own rather than those of any older person. In considering the relative merit of the essays off -red in the several age classes, due weight will he given to handwriting, style, neatness, etc.; but (he great <st stress of till will he laid on the accuracy of statement of the several contestants, the originality and npparenl spontaneity displayed and most especially the real worth of the subject mutter itself. The benelit to the community of such a transformation and the civic necessity to continue this movement and novel' let it stop ought to be ' (d)vious because. While It is realized that some of the words in the above printed form may possibly prove slightly abstruse to the "little shavers." it is not neces sary that they do more than till in? In their own language? the blank spaces after the meaning of the print ed words has been, if necessary, care i fully explained to them. Governor Brown, of Georgia today refused to honor requisition papers issued by Governor Blouse, ot South Carolina, for Thomas i!. Felder, an Atlanta at torney, for whom a warrant has been sworn out in Nowborry, s. C, charg ing him with attempted bribery of II. II. Evans, a former member of the dis pensary board, The contention of .Mr. Folder's at torneys that the requisition papers were inadequate because they lacked affidavits to indicate that any per son bad specific knowledge of the al leged offense, was sustained by Gov ernor Brown. The papers merely in cluded a copy of a warrant charging that "One B. F, Kelley from informa tion presented to him believed T. B. Felder on the . . day of October, 1905" Offered or promised "certain gratuities or gifts" to II. It. Evans. When Govornoi Brown told .Mr. Fol der that ho had denied extradition, the latter replied that lie "probably would be going to South Carolina very soon" on his own accord. He declared his innocence of any attempt to bribe and asserted that the warrant was merely a subterfuge on the part of bis enemies to get him Into the state. "I would like to see your creden tials" demanded Mr. Felder when W. A. Holman, of Charleston, S. C, arose to address the governor to argue for honoring the requisition, "1 want to know who is back of these charg es." "I am here merely as a lawyer, representing the sovereign state of South Carolina," replied Mr. Holman. "As to anything back of these charges I know nothing. My credentials, as you will see, are signed by Governor Blease." Several prominent members of the Georgia bar addressed tho governor in behalf ol Mr. Felder and cited num erous precedents in which courts in Georgia and other stales had declined requisitions because the papers did not conform to the laws of the state upon whose executive they were is sued. Burton, who was horn and raised near Owlngs Station, this county. Besides being interested in this work, Mr. Burton is President of the Morgan County Sun day School Association, one of the strongest religious organizations in the state.
