Jennings, will refuse to countersign checks transferring tho dispensary fund, amounting to $25,000, to four banks. In tho Stat", tho banks not having '? I in approved by the State financial board as depositories for State funds. The $25,000 in question is now on deposit In tho National Loan and Exchange bank ot* Columbia where it was placed as a working capital by the former commission. Several days ago the new commis sion passed a resolution authorizing the $25,000 to be placed in the follow ing banks: Enterprise bank of Charleston. $5 - j 000. Bank of Mulllns, $:>,ooo. Bank of Blshopvlllo, $5,000. Newberry Savings bank, $5,1)00. Farmers' Uulon Hank and Trust company of Orangeburg, $5,000. The Newberry Savings bank of New berry is the only bank approved by the financial board, which is compos ed of the governor, State treasurer and comptroller general, as depositor ies for State funds. Fach bank Is lo cated In the resident town of a member of the commission. The action of the State treasurer In refusing to countersign the Checks Is not a reflection on the banks men tioned. There are a large number of banks in the State, not designated as depositories for State funds, and the board select:; those in which money will be placed. State Treasurer Jennings has ad dressed a letter to the secretary of the new commission, informing him of his position and this letter was BOH I following the receipt of the resolu tion. As lie was turning his horse In tho pas ture, the animal in a playful mann sr kicked dp, striking Mr. Wesson on the face, inflicting a painful wound, and knocking out several teeth. He went to the hospital for treatment, return ing Friday somewhat improved. The Methodist folks here are erect ing a new house of worship. The foun dation and frame work lias been com. | pleted ami it is expected that t'ne build ing will he completed In a short while. This work has been under considera tion for some time and the people re joice that their hopes are soo to he realized. The church Is situated in the western portion of the town, opposite Mr. J. H. Motes' residence. Our college students are returning from their respective schools. Mr. William Kellers came in Friday from South Carolina University. Others ape expected this week. Miss Ruth Stokes is a member of the graduating class at Winthrop College and will receive her diploma, along with the other mem bers this week. We acknowledge re ceipt of an invitation to be present. Mr. Wm. Werts has replaced the old shingle covering of his dwelling with a new tin roof. Mr. M. U. Crisp is making some needed repairs and improvements on his dwelling.?repainting being one of the Important features of the work. Mr. K. L. Whitlook has purchased a new threshing outfit and will be ready to serve the public on the grain crop. There are several good crops of oats here already harvested and housed, and a few crops of wheat. There is no better man ror preparing and running machinery of this kind than Mr. Whit lock. Our farmers are fortunate in this new equipment. Miss Marie Stokes has gone to Rock Hill to attend the Winthrop College commencement. Her sister, Miss Ruth Stokes, graduates from that college this week. Miss Kanie Culbertsorj has gone to (Cross Hill this week to attend the mar riage of her sister. Miss Olive Culbert son, which happy event takes place next Wednesday, 7th inst., at the home of the bride's father. Mr- J. A. Culbert son.
