That was an act of true heroism in
Mr. Gregory, tit the depot last Friday
morning, when ho crawled under the

was no particular friend of. Employ

When It comes to the moving pic
ture show question, Laurens has un

the first appearance of the big Ulms,
the Laurens patrons are treated with
the entire spectacle. Then when one
of the Laurens citizens takes a little
trip a few weeks later to some of the
nearby towns, like Greenwood for in
stance, he is struck with (laming ad
vertisements of these very same Ulms
that the Laurens folks have forgot
ten about. la order to refresh his
memory he takes In the show again
and finds that not only are the Ulms
late in reaching thore, but lo and be

From what we can gather from peo
ple living 111 that section. It seems
that the practice of dynamiting tlsh
is being carried on in the Mt. Olive
neighborhood, This Is contrary to law

guilty of shooting bis neighbor. The
laws are very clear on this subject

Is rather hard to catch up with peo
ple who violate these laws, but String

and game are becoming scarcer and
scarcer every year, due almost entire
ly to ruthless.and heartless hunters

placed in the class of sportsmen.
Doubtless our rural policemen, who
are doing such good work at this time
for the preservation of order over the
county, will look into this matter and
see that the guilty parties are brought

COL. TIIOS. II. CREWS.
In tho death of Col. T. B. Crows,
! .aureus County has lost one of its
most familiar and prominent citizens.
Though his life's work was devoted
principally to Journalism, Col. Crews
found the time and accepted the hon
or of representing his county In the
general assembly of the State and la
ter discharged faithfully and well the
duties of postmaster, having been ap
pointed to this position by Grover
Cleveland. While he did not assume
leadership he was nevertheless very
Influential In this county politically |
and was for many years high up in the
councils of those chosen to manage
the ship of State.
Ho was loyal to his friends and no
tm n perhaps was more appreciative
of the esteem and deferenco shown
him personally and otherwise by those
whose friendship lie enjoyed. A gen.
Hornau of the old Lcaool, a man of
line bearing, a writer candid and fear
less. Col. Crews was widely known
throughout the State and he will he
missed.

pleting the defeat of Napoleon around
Moscow, when the great leader was
forced to retreat on account of lack
of provisions.
"This moving picture film is con
sidered by all authorities upon the
subject as the most magnificent and
spectacular military drama in the
world, costing about $25,000.00. It
depicts in wonderful photography Na
poleon's campaign against Russia and
his disasterous defeat at Moscow, in
which the soldiers of the C/.ar hovered
beyond reach of the French army, de
stroying by flro dwellings and pro.
visions until the great Napoleon was
forced to retreat with his army deci
mated at every step by privation and
hunger and the wolf-like guerilla sor
ties of the Russians.
TIIK STORY OF ROLAND.
Alter three years of service. Gl'On
ndler Roland is honorably discharged
and returns home to wed his fiancee,
Helene, but is plunged in grief to
learn that she has been unfaithful and
has wed a French Officer. To divert
his mind from this unfortunate love
affair he reenlists on the eve of the
departure of the army lor Russia, and
finds himself under the command of
Helena's husband.
Confhb in of the victory of the in
vading army. Helene joins her hus
band at the outposts, and there Ro
land comes face to race with her. The
meeting is highly dramatic. II > flings
hitler reproaches at her. and she re
plies with sharp retorts. At that mo
ment the officer comes up. and Ro
land salutes his superior and departs.
The next day the battle of Moscow
takes place,?a thrilling scene with
belching cannon and struggling sol
djors. and Helene's husband falls
wounded and his command is swept
hack. When word Is brought to Hel
ene her grief Is touching, and she
seeks Roland and implores him to
rescue the fallen man. Roland plung
es back Into the maelstrom of death
and destruction, and midst a rain of
whistling bullets and bursting shells
carries the officer to safety.
Defeated, Hie Russians burn the city
of Moscow and flee, the spectacular
conflagrations In the distance pre
senting an awe-inspiring spectacle.
Napoleon takes possession of the city,
but hjs victory Is short-lived for no
provisions are to be had and ho Is
forced to retreat.
The troops suffer from hunger and
cold and the Russians harass them
with swift attacks which deplete the
ranks. Helene and her wounded hus
band endure untold tortures, which
are lessened, however, by the faithful
attendance of Roland who devotes
himself loyally to their care."

The closing exercises of the Gray
Court. Owings High Schtol took
place last Friday night in the audi
torium of the school building. Super
intendent Claud Martin presided dur
ing the evening and also made a short
talk to the patrons about the work of
the school. There were fifteen graduat
es this year, four of whom were young
ladies.
Following the opening talk by Prof.
Martin, six young ladies gave delight
fui recitations. Four of these. Misses
Owens. Moore. Kiddle and Hryson
were members of the graduating class
This part of the program was followed
by the address of the evening to tho
class of 1011. This was by Hon. F. P.
McQowan of Laurens. who in his usual
Interesting and illuminating way gave
some useful advice on the duties of
yotmg graduates.
There were two medals given this
year. One given for tho best recita
tion by a pupil was won by Miss Shell.
The judges were Rev. J. L. McCain.
W. B. Knight and Jno. M Cannon. The
other medal, a gold watch given for
diligence in school work was present
ed to Mr. .lohn C. Bolt. During the
evening the pupils o: the school de
lighted the audience with songs.

County Rural Letter Carriers Asso
ciation was held in the court house
yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. The
association was reorganized by the
election of the following officers: W G
McDanlol, president: o. y. Hellams,
vice president: W. L. Taylor, secre
tary and treasurer. An executive
committee was also elected for the
year and is composed of the follow
ing members: Hogan Motes of Mount
Vllle, C. W. Simpson of Ware Shoals,
W. y. McNeil of Waterloo. Joe Leake
of Clinton, J. B. Johnson of Gray
Court.
The association elected Arch C.
Owings of Cray Court. W. G. Mc Dan lei
of Laurens and Chas. W. Simpson as
delegates to the State Convention of
Rural Carriers at Florence in July,
with G. C. Abercromble, Calvin Fuller
and 'V. M. Bolt as alternates.

Friday evening at Fountain Inn the
members of the different choirs of this
city, who have sung several cantatas
very successfully, will sing "The
Nazarene" the one which has proved
most popular with the music loving
people here. This cantata was sung
for the first time by them last Spring
and proved a great success.
The party, composed of about twen
ty-five members under the leadership
of Mr. Charles W. Hicks, will go up
Friday afternoon In automobiles and
return after the entertainment.

the benefit of the Woman's Aid Society
of the Fountain Inn Methodist church.
