IN MEXICAN WAR

El Paso, Texas. April 23.?An ar
mistice of live days beginning at noon
today and affecting the districts of
Juarez and Chihuahua and west of the
latter city was made effective today In
mi exchange of identical letters sign
ed by Gen. Francisco I. Madero, for
the rebels, and Gen. Juan Navarro for
the government.
The truce provides that there shall
be no movement of troops during the
next five days and that provisions and
medicines may he brought to either
Camp from the American side without
payment of duty.
It is noted that Ojlnaga. where a
; in 'II federal force Is besieged, is not
covered In the armistice, the Insurrec
to activities in that district being larg
ly independent. It is expected that in
the event of the settlement of the re
bellion in Chihuahua, the situation at
Ojlnaga ami other scattered places
throughout the republic will receive
attention. The moral effect of the ces
sation of hostilities in Chihuahua Is
regarded ?as certain to tmike settle
ments In other parts of the country
simple.
Actual peace negotiations preced
ed the armistice. It was known that
a truce was agreeable to Madero, and
a telegram from the city of Mexico in
formed Gen. Madero that Gen. Navarro
?ad been instructed by President Diaz
to enter into the pact.

Mrs. Rebecca Brook?.
Died at tlu> home of her daughter,
Mrs. Rebecca Brooks, January 2nd,
liUI, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, sin- was
born August '-'Tili 1827. Had she lived
until August sin? would have been 82
years old She vvtis the daughter of
Major Richard Watts, who was a
brother of Dr. .1. 1'. Walts and Col.
Bluford Watts, who was very promi
nent in politics before the War Be
tween thg Slates. Mrs. Brown was
the mother of eleven children. Three
survive her: J. (i. Brown. R. W. Brown
and Mrs. Pierre Brooks. She united
with the Presbyterian church at Cross
Hill when quite young and all these
years made an active and consistent
member. She loved her church and
nothing gave her more Joy and pleas
ure than to be found in the sanctuary.
It can be truthfully said ot her that
she was faithful In all of life's work.
She has left a godly heritage, not only
to the childri u that are left behind, but
to the community In which site lived.
