TWO FINE SCHOOLS CLOSE.
Sessions of the Ekom and Madden
Came to an End Last Friday.
On Friday last the session of the
Madden school came to a close ?\iih
an informal basket picnic dinner and
a general good time spent by the pu
pils in the afternoon in the fine grove
surrounding Prospect church. The
Madden school is one of the best In
tho county, the session always running
eight mouths each year. Prof. B. V.
CulbertSOU. member of the county
board of education, has been the prin
cipal of this school for more than a
dozen years, and his work has always j
been characterized by its thoroughness
and his school is-recognized as one of i
the best in Laurens County.
The Ekom school also closed its
lOlO-'ll session on Friday. The day'
was pleasantly spent by tho school i
and some of its friends, the pupils en- !
lertainlng with an attractive program j
of exercises, after which a picnic din
ner was enjoyed. This school, like
tho Madden school, has enjoyed a pros
perous year under the prlnclpalship
of Prof. L. D. Blledge, a progressive
and thoroughly efllclent school man
who has been engaged In teaching
for quite a number of years.

We notice with gratification that
Secretary McKcand of the Charleston
chamber of Commerce is working on
a plan to build a 300.mlle highway in
one day. He proposes to link Asho
ville and Charleston with a fine sand
clay thoroughfare. This is the same
perject which was launched in New
berry some weeks ago on a smaller
scale, however, when wo undertook
and formed a joint committee to build
a highway between Greenville and Co
lumbia.
We are very glad to have Mr. Mc
Kcand and bis chamber of commerce i
work with us along the same line, and 1
we desire to say to hint that we will
be delighted to receive suggestions and
to cooperate in this movement.
The road from Columbia to Green
ville has been practically agreed upon,
and really the only route that could
be taken V itli any assurance of a good
road in the near future is via New
berry and Laurens. If it should be
desired to go to Spartanhurg. there
are several practical and feasible
routes after you reach Newberry, or
you can go to Greenville and then take
the national highway to Spartanhurg.
The load from Newberry to Green
Vlll - is in fairly good condition, but
no doubt after the rains of the past
few days, needs dragging.
We understand that the supervisor
of Lexington is already at work carry
ing out his promise, and is now build
ing the road between Lexington and
Chapln.
We did not expect to build the road
in a day. but we hoped to secure tin
co-operation of the people along the
i way and Of the supervisors of the sev
eral counties, and to take at least a
week or ton days to put the road in
fine condition. However, we will lie
glad to arouse an interest and co
operate with our Charleston friends,
and we are satisfied that we can get
the pcoplo of this section to give of
their labor and teams for one or more

election upon the question of voting
a High School in said school district
have been filed with the County
Hoard of Education, an election is
hereby ordered upon said question,
said election to be held on the 19th
day of May. 1911. at the Princeton
School House, under the niaragemcn'
of the trustees of said school district.
Only such electors as return real
or personal propertly for taxation and
exhibit, their tax receipts and regis
tration certificates as required in gen
ernl elections shall be allowed to vote.
Thoso favoring the High School
shall vote a ballott containing the
words "For'High School" written or
printed thereon. Those against the
Mich School shall vote a ballott Con
taining tho words "Against High
School'' written or printed thereon.
Pol's shall open at the hour of
o'clock in the forenoon and shall re
main open until the hour of A o'clock
in Hie aft< moon when they shall close
and the ballolts be counted.
The trustees shall report the results
of the election to the County Board
of Education within ten days thereaf

"Rays" Is the stylo of a new firm
which will open up In the Dial-Gray
block within a very short while. The
firm is composed of several young
business men around the city, the
manager being Mr. Clyde Hay, who un
til recently has been with the Palmet
to Pharmacy.
The Qrm will do a generr.l soda wa
ter and confectionary business. A
handsome new fount and modern fix
tures have been ordered and just as
soon as these arrive the doors will bo
thrown open to the public.
To Install New Fixtures.
Dr. U. F. I'osey has closed a con
tract with a lixture and soda fountain
concern to install at an early date a
complete and up-to-date set of new
llxtures in his store on the east side
of the public square. A new soda
fountain will b ? erected, Tr.ra/.a floors
put down and a double deck suit of
llxtures, the only one of Its kind in
the state, has been bought. When the
finishing touches have been put on
It, It will bo one of the prettiest stores
?in the city.
Oh; Hack!
Hore is a novel scheme and a very
meritoriU8 one the store keepers will
think. A number of hackmen have
had erected a telephone booth in the
front of Davis-Roper's store where
their patrons can always llnd them
when not engaged. It has always been
more or less bother for the merchants
to be culled on to summon hacks.

Mr. Fleming Smith has accepted a

already entered upon his duties. He
