FOUNTAIN INN EDITOR PLAYS EX-CATHOLIC Callfl on Baptist Ministers of the State to Make an Investigation into hit* diameter and Motives. In the last Issue of the Fountain Inn Tribune the letter published be low was printed. Those who are more or less familiar with the subject of the Phillipic know that wherever this man has gone, he has stirred up strife among the people. Ho has now been in this State for some time, spending some months in Anderson County where the newspapers for awhile were filled with charges and countercharges about his work. Ford Todd Cox, Rev. G. W. Bussey, and the Baptist Ministers of the State of South Carolina: Gentlemen: As some of you are aware, a man by tho name of T. Augustine Dwyer Is preaching and lecturing from the pulpits of Baptist churches through out the State of South Carolina. It is understood that this man is a* member of tho Baptist church at Star. Ho claims to nave been con verted to tho Protestant faith after having boon educated for the priest hood in tho Roman Catholic church. He is a man of wide reading, per sonal magnetism, wonderful mem ory, and considerable ability as a public speaker. His sermons and lectures in Foun tain Inn have db/ided the people, caused bitterness ami aroused sus picion. Ho has made a few close friends nnd a few enemies. A number of people In Fountain Inn have written North to Investi gate this man's past. The reports received have been derogatory. A letter received Friday evening from Charles Hay aid Mitchell, pastor of the St. .lames Methodist Episcopal church in Chicago, states that Dwyer was forced to leave the MethodiatH on. account of a crime too unutter able rotten to speak of in print. The letter further states that Dwyer is a liar, a dead-beat and a hypocrite. The writer volunteers to substantiate his statements. The case, gentlemen, simmers down to this: Mr. Dwyer Is either a good man, bitterly persecuted; or he Is an .evil man, worthy of condemnation. j If he Is trying now to live a Christ tlan life, then his past is none of your I business nor of mine. If he Is not what he professors to 1 be, then his past is your business, 'and my business, and the business of all decent people. These letters from the North are Wirtten by men In high places?men in whoso word wo musj place confi dence. We must not close our eyes to reliable evidence of guilt. To do that would be no less wrong than to condemn without a hearing. This matter must bo sifted. Mr. Dwyer is a member of your church. He Is preaching from your pulpits. You are, in a measure, re sponsible for him, and we look to you for the truth and for justice. If he is honest, clean, Godly, com mon decency demands that you rally to his support, defend him against his persecutors, and place the stamp of your approval upon his efforts and his character. Make his vindi cation so utterly clear that no man can doubt. If he is not clean; if ho is the thing that Charles Bayard Mitchell says ho Is, then you owe it to God. to your church, to the people of your State land to yourselves to 'alck him out of your pulpits, and brand him before all the world as an impostor and a hypocrite, absolutely unworthy of con fidence. Greenville, April 1.?Rev. Dr. A. J. 3. Thomas, editor of the Baptist Cour ier, the literary organ of the Baptist denomination of South Carolina and one of the lending figures of tho do nomination in the South, died hero this afternoon after a lingering illness. The funeral exorcises and interment will take place Sunday afternoon. Dr Thomns has received almost ev ery gift of honor in the power of ;ho Baptist denomination of South Caro lina. In 1885 he was elected secre tary of the State Baptist convention, aposltlon which ho held until 1894. | In 1SS9 he was elected vice president of the foreign mission board of South Carolina. He was mado president of the State convention in 1907, serving in that capacity two years. For many years ho was a member.of the state missionary board and of tho boards of Greenville Female college and Fur man university. At tho time of his death Dr. Thomas was a member of the board of trustees of the Southern Bap tist Theological seminary and of Bene dict college at Columbia.
