ANNUAL||HIGH SCHOOL CONTEST AT UNIVERSITY Krent of Mach Importance to the High Schools Of South Carolina will be Palled off on April 29th. The committee on high school ath letics at the University of South Caro lina has completed Its plans for pro gressive activity during this year and announces the second annual inter high school athletic contest for Satur day. April 29, on the university ath letic field, in Columbia. This activity on the part of the uni versity comes In answer to the vital need in South Carolina for better and more systematic participation In ath letes and as an evidence of the desire of the university to be of service to the people ol the State In every way possible. The plans are broad and comprehensive. P. B. Schotleld, head of the department of physical educa tion, has done good service in direct ing the organization of county athletic associations and the encouragement of county meets. Several sections of the I State have already well conducted 1 athletic contests, which is but evi dence of the crowing tendency toward this featur f education. tire in Contest. A circular letter has been sent throughout the state announcing the contest. The university will enter tain all contestants, five from each I school, for supper on Friday, through Saturday and for breakfast on Sunday. The events will be in the following or der: 100-yaid dash. 880-yard run. L'2o yard dash. 410-yard run. one mile, pole vault, broad Jump, 220-yard (low) hurdles, shot put, high jump. Eligible schools are those having nine or more grades. An entry fee of 50 cents per man must aceompanx the application, which must be in before April -0. No more than two men for each school will 1 e permitted in euch event. Medals will be awarded the Individual winners and a trophy cup to the school making the most points. The most valuable feature, perhaps, of tl'.e committee's work is the pub lication and sending forth ol a book lel containing directions for the con tests and training hints for each of the events of the meet. Feb. 22. ?Three men have been arrested and more than $2,000 in money and jewelry has been recovered as a result of the three days' search for the gang of bandits which held up and robbed the Southern Railway fast mail train at White Sulphur Springs last Sat urday morning. It is the belief of the officers of the express and rail way company that the entire gang has been rounded up, but their iden ity still is unknown. Following the capture of one of the robbers about four miles from Dah. lonega, two other members of the Kang were arrested this morning by a posse headed by ex-sheritf Edwards of Lutnpkln county. The men were surprised on a public road about I t miIos from Uahlonega and offered no resistance, They were placed in jail at Gabion >ga tonight and will be brought to Gainesville tomorrow.
