Laurens Is fast coming one of the largest freight centers in the State. ? ? ? A glance at the advertising columns handled by The Advertiser this week will convince most anybody that the Laurens" merchants are of the wide awake variety. ? ? ? The News and Courier's special col umn giving dally cotton market re ports from over the State is one of the best newspaper Matures dug up j In many a day. And, by the way. it shows the Laurens market to be along with the best. ? ? ? ORPH INAOE ENDOWMENT, The Advertiser has received from the Rev. .1. Ii. Branch the following appeal which is printed in full and earnestly commended to all our read ers, especially those who belong to the Ptesbjlerlan church: The raising ot the proposed endow ment of $100.000 for the Thorn well Orphanage on the 9th of December is a job for the laymen. "The good friends of the Orphanage in Darlington count) :.?:, the matter out of the hands of the church so far as their part was concerned and rais ed as their share of the (160.000 the sum of $2.000. Their share would properly lave been $1,200 for there nre only 100 Presbyterians' in that county, hut they added JSnu to that tor good measure, and it was the kind of good measure that helps the orphanage and the orphanage appre ciates. "We are going to ask laymen in all our churches on the 9th day of Decem ber to pass around a subscription list and get as large a subscription as possible for tin' orphanage endowment We believe that the Presbyterians are going to swell the endowment fund that day. We need it badly. It takes $12,000 a year to pay the salaries and take care of repair- and insurance on the orphanage. Dr. Jacobs has to raise that sum every year along with the stun for the support fund. It Is hoped that we shall be able to raise the $150,000 needed In order to pay these running expense.-. The assistance and encourage- 1 ment given them by the school au thorities are noteworthy stamps of approval that speak well for their knowledge of what Is beneficial to the growing boy. The bodily exercise that the young HChotar receives dally either on the football Held, the base ball field or the tennis court runs al most parallel beneficially to the mind exercise that he receives In the class room. The outdoor exercise In orery game produces both a mental and a physl oal development. No one, of course, will deny that outdoor makes the participant stronger and healthier. And no one will deny that the robust, heal thy child is far more capable of learn Ing than the weak, sickly person. And yet. without as a rule giving the sub ject careful thought, many parents ob | ject to their boys taking part In ; school athletics. They give as their reason, that the afternoon should be : devoted to study. Part of the after noon should be but certainly not all. From three till half past four is time enough for any child to spend over books in the afternoon, and from that time until dark thev should spend building up body and mind in play end pleasure. Many parents overlook the fact that outdoor exercise lends to develop the . mind, la the games of baseball end football particularly developed as they are almost to a science, i quick, ac tive brain Is reqtllstO for success. Every boy works with a will to make that success and In his struggle for supremacy on til" athletic Held, he knows that the mind as well as the body must be trained. And even though he does not try to be a leader. If he pi ay 8 at all. the brain action necessary tends to develop the mind. There have been many objections ' to foot-hall raised in regard to the danger Incurred. I'nder the present rules, the "rough and tumble" plays l have been practically eliminated. ' thereby greatly lessening the chances for injury. Of course, even now. there Is some little danger but who admires ' a boy that hasn't tue true American spirit of daring and boldness and his j indifference to dang sr. "Only nine Candidates arc announced for the vacant office of county auditor , in Laurens. The salary of the office is about $1,000 a year. No man whose labor Is worth less 'ban three dollars a day should be nominated for it. If each of the nine Candidates gives 40 days to canvass for the office and spends $i" in canvassing expenses, the nine will spend the equivalent of $1.1 To in a contest for a one thousand dollar position?supposing that all o' the nine arc equipped to fill it satis factorily.?Columbia S?ate. True enough if ail the candidates were giving their entire time to can vassing the county. But since only one can reap the oiu thousand dollar reward, it's a safe bet that the majori ty will hold tieht to what they've already got. No premature chicken counting for Laurens candidates . ? ? ? Laurens is maintaining her repu tation this season as one of the best cotton markets in the l'p-country. A comparison of prices as paid in oth er markets proves the correctness of this statement. And then the receipts compare most favorably with the larg est towns In the State. Laurens is all right, and business Is already good and the indications are that the sea son will be the best In several years. ? ? ? The new passenger train, morning and evening, from Greenville to Lau rens and the new schedule on the C. N. & L. have elicited much praise at the hands of the traveling public. The service is good and the passenger from Greenville is known as the "Business Man's Train." Mr. Fleming Much improved. The fri nds In the city and county of Mr. J. 0. C. Fleming will be grati fied to know that he is Convalescing after -an illness of several days. Mr. V, I). Ilnrksdtilr \( Hospital. Mr, c i louglas Barksdale, one of the city's most prominent citizens, was taken to the Columbia hospital Friday night for an operation for appendicitis, He was accompanied by his daughter. Miss Laura Barksdale, and Dr. Chris topher. The operation was performed Friday night late, and was entirely successful. His condition has continu ed satisfactory and with ho compli cations his restoration to health should be steady Mr. Barksdale first suffered the atack Wednesday night and few pepole of the city knew of his illness until Fl Ida) evening when it was de cided by attending physicians that an Operation was advisable. Miss Maud Wells is In Atlanta to attend a business college. Mr. George Carter Riser died Oct. the 10th inst. at his home near Whit mire. His many friends here remem ber him as a jolly Cross Hill boy a few years ago. He was a great suffer er from rhueinatism for several years. The family have our sympathy. Rev. Q. M.
