Walter Martin, colored, who was
shot some ten days ago, is improving
and will soon be well again.
A tenant house on Mr. R. T. Dunlap's
place, occupied by a family of colored
people, was burned Friday night. The
lire is supposed to have been an ac
cident.
A series of revival meeting:; i:; in
progress this week at the Presbyter
ian church. Rev. Jas. 10. Bradley of
Georgia is assisting the pastor in the
meeting at. 1 doing the preaching.
Messrs A. E. Adams and Eugene
Crisp who have been quite sick for
some days are about well again.
Mr. Milam Bryson spent several
weeks this summer In Arkansas visit
ing his uncle. He returned home Fri
day.
Mrs. Corry still and daughter Marie
of Greenwood, and Miss Oilio Culhert
son of Cross Hill visited their cous
ins, the family of W. P. Culhertson,

Misses Edna Cureton of Greenville
and Annie Huff of Laurena are visit

Tom Johnson.
Tow Johnson, colored was shot and
killed on Monday sixteen miles from
Newberry by Mr. Jack Day with a
pistol. The killing occurred in Lau.
rens county, about a half mile from
the Newberry line in the road branch
ing off from the Ninety Six road and
leading out to 1 lopewell by Mr. Reeder
Workman's.
Mr. Day rents Mrs. Waller Barro's
farm and lives there. He had Tom
Johnson hired. It seems that Johnson
was more ready to work for others
than for Mr. Day. On Monday Mr.
Day told him to pull fodder in his
field; but instead of that he went to
a neighbor, Mr. J. L. Dickert, near by.
and went to work in his held. Mr.
Day went there after him and order
ed him to go home and go to work in
Iiis own field. He refused until Mr.
Dickert told him be must get out of
Ibis field; that if he wan hired ?o Mr.
Day he should not work for him. The
negro left with Mr. Day.
Mr. Dickert says that after they had
gone a little while and were out of
his sight he heard a pistol shot. He
went to see what had happened, and
found the negro lying dead, witli a
I knife in his hand.
Mr. Day says that Johnson continu
ed in his ill humor after leaving Mr.
Dickert's and that he put his hand in
his pocket and drew out something
that he took for a pistol, and he shot
to protect himself.
Mr. Day came down to Newberry
I on the evening train and employed
Messrs Blease & Dominic k to defend
him. Mr. Dominic k went before Judge
Watts at Laurens Oll Wednesday ami
sc eni ed im order allowing bail in the
sum of $1,500. Mr. Day pave bail at
once and returned to his home. New
