A LETTER FROM LISBON. "Views and Comments by The Adver tiser's Correspondent. Lisbon, Aug 8.?The farmers have about finished hoeing and plowing cotton. Some of the crops arc in fine shape while others are not so good. Around Lisbon the Crops are some bet ter but later than lasl year, but this crop depends upon the early or late fall. Mr. Jam6s i'(limes has n veny line prospect In the Hoys' Corn COUtCSt of the Anderson variety. We hope that James will como out with first prize this fall. We have had line rains. We . feel now, If nothing happens, we may make a fairly good yield of both corn and cotton. There is a tine pea vine hay crop coining on that will add much to the forage crop. Mrs. Cora Wharton and son of Rock ingham, N. C, Miss Marie Oliphant of Blacksburg and Miss Margaret Dunlap of Laurons spent at fortnight with Mrs. J. T. Ballew. Mrs. Charles Milam and son of Cam. den, Mr. L. Mllam of Columbia, Mr. Rlvens Milam of Durham, N. C. and others are spending a whllo with Mrs. Milam and Mrs. Fuller. The Wrights, Howells and Browns went down on Little river last Fri day, near Dunlap's bridge, and caught more Hsli than they could eat. That means something, as we know how those men enjoy a tlsh stew made by Mr. Howell. Your correspondent went on a little? outing to Qlenn and West Spring last week. Found the crops very poor with few exceptions and In many plac es needing rain very badly. There was a large crowd at Glenn's Hotel and private hoarding houses. Heard buj little politics. Featherstono, Mc Leod, and Blease were the only men 1 heard mentioned for governor. We think that Featherstone is in lead and will end up that way. Dr. Owens graduated with distinction at the Baltimore Medical college last spring and has been engaged In hos pital work for the college since. Mrs. J. C. Austin and little son, of. Vldolln, Georgia, nre with relatives] here. Miss Nettie Simpson of Edgefleld is with Mrs. Davenport. * Mrs. Hayne Bryson is visiting Mrs. Lizzie Bryson. The piano contest at Rasor, Leaman and Denny ended last Wednesday. Mls3 Nannie Goodman won the piano. She received the highest number of votes, 2,285,223 The next highest was Miss Lucia Hill with 1,358,107. The meeting at the Baptist church continued during iast week. Lev. James Martin, brother of the Pastor, Rev. J. A. Martin, did all the preach ing. The meeting at the Presbyterian church began yesterday. Rev. Mr. Rousenberg of Georgia will assist the pastor here Rev G. M. Hollingsworth and family returned last Friday from a visit to their homefolks near Conyers, Ga. Mrs. R. A. Austin, Misses Kate and Anne Austin and Gertrude leaman will return from Montreat today. Mr. P. B. Smith died at his home in Cross Hill Thursday night, August 4th and was buried Friday at the Presby terian cemetery. Mr. Smith was In his usual health. Ho was taken sud denly 111 about 0 o'clock and died at 11 o'clock. He leaves a wife to mourn her loss. Mr. Smith was about r>6 years of age and was a useful Citizen.
