Dr. Manning Edwards started out by saying that it was the first time he had asked the people of Laurens to elect him to a seat in the house of representatives, but he was in earn est about the matter and he wanted the people of his county to tints honor him. Is son of Revolutionary War soldier and is himself a veteran of the War Between the States. Will do his whole duty if elected. Thinks one of the important things that might en gage the serious thought and attention of a legislator would be that of "kill ing bills." Regretted that whiskey question had been brought into cam paign. The fact that eight citizens want to represent old Laurens in the legislative halls of South Carolina is the biggest thing in this campaign, so far, he thinks. Judge of lVobalc. Judge o. G. Thompson who is mak ing the rate alone for reelection to the office of probate judge, took oc casion and time to merely thank the people for the consideration that the.v have always shown him and assured them that he would ever remember his obligations to them. . Supt. of Education. J, C. Burdette is for the second time seeking election to the office of sup erintendent Of education. Consider.; himself qualified to till the position. Pointed out what he regards as the duties of the superintendent toward teachers, pupils and patrons. Believes that mistake was made in giving au thority to the superintendent to name school trustees, for the "old way was good enough." He Is certain, however, that Supt. Pitts has done his duty. Geo. L. Pitts, candidate for reelec tion to tho otllce of county superin tendent, declared that he had striven to do his whole duty and that he had no apollgies to make for carrying out the school law. The county has made wonderful progress, even within the past two years. When dispensary funds gave out people voted special levies and went down in their pockets in order that their boys and girls might get the benefit of longer terms, with the result that the school term has been Increased from an average of six months to seven and a half. School houses are going up everywhere?new modern buildings, and better teachers are being employed. If school lnw doos not suit the people let It be changed, but as long as it remains on statute books, Geo. L. Pitts will stick to it to the letter. Count)' Treasurer. Ross D. Young said that he could not in truth say "that he was glad to be standing before the audience, for It was with fear and trembling that he thus came" asking for the of fice of county treasurer. W. B. Washington did not think it necessary for him to enter upon a discussion of the tax question; that he will be satisfied to be allowed to collect them for Laurens county after this year. J. I). V Magistrate Laurens Township. There is also a three cornered race in this township for magistrate, the aspirants for this position being Mag istrate John M. Hudgens, R. W. Nichols and W. M. lrby.
