Charleston, July 12.-?Fire which
broke out at 6:15 o'clock Friday af
ternoon completely gutted five large
wholesale establishments on Meeting
street and threatened the Charles
ton hotel, just ncross the street and
caused a loss which is estimated at
about $400.ti(??. The buildings jutted
are the Paul E. Trouche company,
the Bailey-Lebby company, the T. A.
Wilbur & Sou, the Marshall-Wescot
Hardware company and two buildings
of the A. it. Tbonilison company1. The
bin new department store of Louis
Cohen & Co. was saved only as the re
sult of desperate work on the part of
the firemen.
Two firemen and one telephone line
man were overcome by smoke hut re
covered consciousness. A heavy rain,
which set in at about 11 :30 o'clock
helped the firemen to net the (lames
under control.
