I GOOD ROADS REPCRTORIALS Laurens is the apex of a triangle, with Greenville and Spartanburg at the ends of the base Hue. The three sides of this triangle are of practical ly the same length; 117 miles and it Is all good road. ? * * The motor car fits Into and com pletes the equipment of lab>r and time saving devices of the up-to-date farmer. It does not supercede the horse, not a bit of it. The horse goes to the field in the morning and the au tomobile carries the produce to town or goes to the mill In a hurry or makes a quick trip to town and hack for some part needed to repair the other machinery. It often saves time for a gang of men employed and will pay for itself in real service. Machinery never gets tired. Work animals do. ? ? ? The improvement of our roads means the enrichment of our county. ? * * A lot of people who stay at home on election day are always ready to "kick" at the choice made at the polls. ? ? ? With good roads and a ma chine the city is brought to the farm and the farmer is in easy reach of the conveniences and attractions of the city. ? * ? The earliest self-propelled vehicles were so expensive that only rich peo ple could afford them but agents say the hulk of sales are now made to pen pie of moderate means. Less money today, buys a better machine than more money could a year ago. ? ? ? Man is a social being. His nature demands change of scene end compan ionship. The bane Of farm life has been its isolation, its lonesomness. Rural free delivery, good roads and automobiles are doing much to re move the undesirable features. ? ? ? Every automobil that passes by a farm incerases the value of that farm. That may sound like a broad state ment to make, but study it a little hit. Then the better the road to it and the greater the num ber of people that see it. the more valuable the land. * * * For years and years, under the old plans about one half the money spent in the Stale for road work was Just so much thrown away, annually. Fstes died at Iiis liome on North Main street Saturday night at "J o'clock at the age of 46 years. He had been in poor health for several months, but seriously ill only a few days, so that his death came as a great shock even to those nearest his bedside. The funeral was held at the borne at 4 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. John F. Vines, pastor of the First Uaptist church, assisted by Rev. \V. \V. Leathers. Interment was made in Silver Brook cemetery. Rev. Mr. Fstes was a native of Ches ter county, and was educated at Fur man university and at the Southern Baptist Theological seminary at Lou isville, Ky. At the time of his death lie was pastor of the Baptist church at Tigerville, Greenvlle county, and had In addition another charge In Greenville. He was also engaged Pi the Insurance business, and a 'ew years ago moved his headquarters from Greenville to Anderson. Rev. Mr. Fstes had been twice married, and is survived by his sec ond wife who was Miss Lottie Cros by, and three children, all by the first marriage. They are Mrs. Robert Row land and Wntkins Fstes of Greenville, and Amos Est es, who makes his homo with his uncle, Dr. Charles Crosby, at Chester.
