The Laurens delegates to the good
roads convention at Spartan burg were
charmed with their reception and the
many attentions given them while in
tlie Spartan City. Likewise they were
gratified with the outcome ?if the
meeting, for each of them believes that
the Bpeclal committee selected to de
cide the Ofllcial route of the Ashcvillc
Spartanhurg-Newberry-<lolumbln high
way will certainly include Laurens,
Enoreo and Woodruff.
While Laurens should be great!>
pleased with tho idea of being on this
route officially, it i-. not believed that
an adverse decision by the committee
would to any appreciable extent cause
tourists to give this section and town
the mi by. All travelers want good
roads. In Lame us. strike the county
wherever you may. the roads are now

Fortunes are sometimes made in a
day. Now and then greatness is thrust
upon some individual. Ordinarily,
however, men accumulate wealth by
degrees, and distinctions of one sort
and another are gained, not by one
master stroke but by strict appli
cation to duty and well directed efforts
toward the goal of success. Herein lies
the pathway of the vast majority ol
those who would rise above mediocri
ty and ultimately climb to (lie top
most rung.
A great measure of success can be
attained in a few years. In a com
paratlvoly short time a foundation can
he firmly und surely established, ac
cording to human standards, on which
may be builded reputations of enduring
quality, it all depends on the determ
ination of the individual to win.
Six years ago a certain young fel
low came to this city from a Laurens!
county town. He had secured a po
sition in ii store prior to his coming.
He bad much to learn a proposition
he seems to have understood from the
beginning, for bis employer than is
authority for the statement that the
young clerk, besides possessing an ap
titude to learn the business, showed
a willingness to work; never complain
ing about long hours or the drudgery 1
of the day's routine or an occasional
extra task. Indeed, when emergencies
arose, ns they not Infrequently do In
the conduct of any business, this same
young fellow was always equal to the ?
occasion, and bis Laurens employer,
with evident pride, now refers to them
as marking the youth for better and
more responsible things in life.
At the end of two years, or four
years ago. the young drug clerk went
to Baltimore and entered the medical
department of the University of Mary
land. The first year be led his class

he was appointed as Interne at tho
University hospital. Today, June 1,
1910, he graduates ns first honor man
in his class of one hundred men, and
has already been designated by the fac
ulty as resident physician for the hos
pital. To him was awarded the class
medal and other honors have been be
stowed upon him from time to time.
He literally worked himself through
I to graduation and stands forth as a
I young physician admirably equipped
for bis chosen profession.

ance, 415; per contllge of attendance.

The Columbia Record announces
that it will inaugurate a good roads
campaign, to COVOI' the entire Stat<
during the summer. It is proposed to
open the campaign about the middle

rens cotton mill village Sunday after
noon at six o'clock. He was about
sixty-five years of age.
