Spartnnburg, May 24.?The Colum bla-A8heville blgliway is going to be built and a working plan to adopt the most feasible route for it was | formed at a meeting at the Harris theatre here today which was attended by delegations from all the towns in terested and especially by about halt of the population of Union county,' speaking figuratively. A committee j of one each to he selected by the cham ber of commerce of Columbia, Spar* tan burg and Ashevllle, is to deter mine the route after riding over the three which were advocated at the meeting today. The Spartanhurg chnmbei will pay the expenses of the commission during the scouting ovei the various roads. The route from Ashevllle to Spar tanhurg has already been determined on and the road with the exception Of a small gap is already in good shape. The low?r end of the highway from Newberry to Columbia was not a matter of dispute either et the route from Spartanhurg to Newberry is the object of contention as there are three different routes proposed- Spartan hurg via Jonesville, Colon and Whit mire to Newberry, approximately 61 miles; Spartanhurg via Lnurens and Clinton to Newberry. approximately 68 miles: and Spartanhurg via Walnut Grove. Mayor Wagnon and Mayor-elect Duncan were among the representa tives as well as the county supervis ors and county officers. Union is af ter the road and after it strong., and her delegates presented the route to its fullest advantage. Dr. Aiken president of the cham ber of commerce of I.aureus, made a strong speech in behalf of the t Lauren8 route. While he agreed with other speakers that the road must be for travelers in all kinds of ve hicles and on horseback, yet It was also to be for automobiles and what automobile travelers wanted was to travel a road wher? they would meet other travelers, pass through towns and see farm houses. He thought the route by Laurons would be the best ( that could he adopted for these rea sons and becuse a large part of the route is in excellent shape now. John Wood, who acted as chairman of the meeting, drew on a huge map the various parts of the route as they Were discussed by the different dele gates, lie afterwards addresser the j assemblage upon the dangers of the many grade crossings and advocated their abolition wherever possible. A suggestion was made by Dr. Ai ken that a missionary he sent to the supervisor of Lexington county in or der to arouse his Interest in the road through Lexington, hut Mr. Moorman of Columbia answered for him that the roads in the Other sections of the county were now in such shape that a force was to he put to work at once in the Dutch Fork section and that in a short time that section ol the highway would show marked Im provement. Clemson College, May 28.?Please announce to your readers that l am now preparing the list of places at which to hold Farmers' institutes dur ing the summer. It is planned to hold a large number of these institutes dur ing July and August and the endeavor Will be to Cover the whole State pretty thoroughly. It is thought best that the majority of these institutes shall be held In the rural districts, at school or Church centers, rather than In coun ty scats or towns. In order that I may plan the work effectively and econo mically, I will he glad to bear from all communities desiring to have one' of these institutes not later than the first Of June. An excellent body of institute work ers, men who can give practically as well as theoretical instruction, will be available for this work, and such a campaign will doubtless be of much benefit. By notifying me of their desire for an institute by the above date the va rious communities will not only facili tate my work of arranging them, but will assure themselves ol securing an Institute, as after the dates are once arranged it will be dlfllcult to rear range them to accommodate the lag gard.
