For the purpose of locating the route for a highway between Spartanburg and Columbia, the Spnrtanburg cham ber of commerce on Thursday sent out a "scouting" party, headed by Secretary John Wood. Accompanying him from Spartanburg were Editor C. O. Hearon of The Herald. Editor C. 11. Henry of The Journal. Mr. .1. T. Harris, Jr., and others. On the way to Clinton via Cross Anchor the par y was joined by automobiles from Wal nut Grove, Woodruff, Moores and oth er points. All along be route the scouts were given a warm reception, and after a stop at Cross Anchor and Clinton the party in the afternoon pushed through to Newberry where the night was spent, after attending a re ception given at the chamber of com merce by the citizens of Newberry. At this meeting resolutions were adopted heartily endorsing the propos ed highway and pledging support in its building. Returning to Spartanburg Friday the scouts came back to Clinton, thence to Laurens, arriving here just at noon. All were loud in praises of the road ! from Laurcns to Clnton, declaring ft the best travelled over on the trip. The members of the party numbering about twenty, were given a cordial greeting and all were invited to the club rooms where luncheon was served and an informal reception and talk fest was held. .lohn Wood, the famed secretary of the Spartanburg chamber of comerce, explained the purposes of the trip, pointed to the enthusiasm that had been aroused along the line so tar travelled, and invited the people of Laurons to attend tin* big public high way meeting to be held in Spartanburg May 24. Mr. C. H Henry, an original good road advocate, spoke briefly of thi' great importance of road build ing. To these talks County Supervisor Humbert responded, setting forth some practical ideas on the subject and as suring the visitors tltat he was pleased to have them in I.aureus on such a mission. Other talks were made by .1. V. Fielder. P. T. Swlt/er of Spartan burg, and .lohn F. Holt of Laurens. The scouts were met here by W. S. Cray. W. W. Simpson and Dr. L. II. Irby of Woodruff. County Supervisor D. M. Miles. A. B. Qroce, Ceo. P. Moore and D. w. McLain of Spartanburg al so joined the party at luncheon hero. At " o'clock the visitors left for Fnoree and Woodruff. Parker, whose resignation as rector of the Church of the Epiph any was noted last week, left Friday morning for Unlontown, Kentucky, where be has accepted the assistant rectorship of St. John's church and a position as instructor in the Episcopal school.
