IMtts has pledged himself to raise $lfi0 which amount he lias coffered as priz es to Laurens County Boys' Corn club. One or two donations to tho fund have been made, hut t!u> entire amount Should be raised at once. Every farmer and business man in the county will, we believe, gladly and cheerfully eon tribute something. Tho boys are now preparing their special acre for corn, according to instructions received from the department at Washington. One hundred and forty-flvo young fanners banded togethor for tho purpose of specializing in tho production of corn In Laurons county means something; and they should have, as we believe they will all possible encourage ment. Now he wants one hundred and fifty dollars, the prize fund, either in cash of pledges. ? ? ? COLOMBIA ADOPTS NEW FLAX. Tho City of Columbia lias adopted the "commission form of municipal gov ormont." By an overwhelming ma jority the citizens of the capital <ity Voted last Saturday to <lo away with the oh! system which provided for the election of a mayor at large and fif teen council men, three chosen from i each of the five wai .Is. The new plan. 88 provldod in an act passed at the ' last session of the general assembly, vests the government of the city in a commission consisting of a mayor and four COUncilmen, all to be elected at Jorge. The act further provides that: "After election the the departments of the city government will be assign ed by the mayor each to one of the live members of council, Including the mayor, who shall respectively be re sponsible for his own department. The mayor is to receive a salary of $2.500 per year and each of the councllmon $2,000. The terms of office are four years. All appointments to city offices are to be made by council from a civil 1 ?ervice list, prepared by a civil ser vice commission after proper qualifi cations.- Heavy penalties are provided for promising or giving jobs or money for political service, before or after ' any election." A vigorous campaign was conducted by special citizens' committees and the newspapers of Columbia for several weeks prior to tho election, and the victory Is considered a forward step fn the matter of municipal government. ? ?? * Between two and three hundred doc tors will st tike Laurons just as the ?census takers get fairly started on their rounds. ? ? ? Some newspapers of tho State, no tably the (lieenwood Journal, have re cently come to the conclusion that they are being imposed upon in the matter of printing complimentary notices and announce rates for all such matter not alt icily of r.ows value. The Advertiser adopted this policy two or three years ago and is practicing it. ? ? ? We shall not be at all surprised to see a majority of those fourteen lads and young men who participated In the deelalmers' contest Friday night rep resenting Laurons or somo other fine county in the South Carolina legisla ture within tho next eight or ten years. This, however, will be merely incl dental to their careers of public ser vice for which they are now shaping themselves; the others will deserve as well nnd will doubtless write their names high on the scroll of honor and fame. ? ? ?
