Columbia, Maroh 17.?Announc ment was made this morning, at ti ofllco of State Superintendent of ? ucatlon Swearlngen, that a youi woman would bo secured to woi with the state department of ??due t ion and the South Carolina Hut School Improvement association i the improvement of the rural sehoo of this state. The mime was in given out for publication, because was desired to find out Hist whethi the person appointed by the educt tlon campaign committee would a< cept. Money for the use of the schoi improvement work has been seem ed from the Peabody fund and froi the southern educational board. 1) Mitchell, a member of the board, si cured $1.000 from the southern edn cational board and Governor Ansc secured $1,000 from the Peabod fund. The amount to be used for th school Improvement feature will I) $1,500. The young woman agent to be so cured will work with the state de partment of education, and the rura school Improvement workers, am will co-operate with the teachers ii the schools for the building of bet tor school houses, for the raising o more local taxes, for libraries in th schools, terms and for other Improve ments. The work will be especiall; with the members of the Hura School Improvement association fo the betterment of the rural schools Mrs. Mary T. Nance-Daniel, of Sa Inda, is president of this association and she has done effcient work in tin hChoots ol' his state. The agent wil go to work soon, at a date to be la ter announced by the state superin tendent. Educational Campaign. The committee on cducatlona c; mpnlgn approved the work ami tin results of the campaign for educa tion hold last summer. The com mlttee appointed a subcommittee consisting of Governor Ansel. Prof Hand and Superintendent Swearin gen. to look into the matter of or educational campaign for the comillf summer. The subcommittee will b< glad to have information from anj counties where educational meetings' may he held this summer. The com mittee will be glad to supply speak ers. The committee has funds wit! which to pay the actual expenses traveling, of the speakers. Hural School Prizes. The state hoard of education at its meeting on March L'.'i will take ii| the matter of prizes for the rura schools. Mr. Swearlngen stated to day that at least $2,000, if not mon will he offered this year. Last yeai 136 schools competed, and the yeai before !?:{ were in the list.
