BUTTER AND MILK CONTEST NEXT MONTH In Connection With Live Stock Asso ciation, Fel ruary 1st. and 2nd. Interesting Contest. Much interest is manifested in the approaching meeting of the South Car olina Live Stock association, which is to be held in Columbia on February 1st, and 2nd. A number of farmers from this county will attend the meet ing, in addition to the regular pro ceedings there will be an interesting contest in butter and milk. There will be a government expert on hand to make the awards and to deliver ad dresses on the science and art of mak ing butter and milk. Prof. Hurgess of Clemson college ad dresses the following letter to all who are interested in the matter: The eighth annual meeting of the South Carolina Live Stock association will be held in Columbia Feb. 1st and 2nd in the hall of the Lutheran Pub lishing Co., on Main street. Knowing that you are Interested in the deveopment of the live stock In dustry of this state. I give you a most Cordial invitation to be present and to join our association. The dues are $1.00 per year or. by the payment of $10.00, you may become a member for life. As a stimulus to the members of the association, we have decided to hold, in connection with the meeting, a Mut ter, Milk and Cream Scoring Contest. It would pay you to enter this contest even if no prize money was offered, hut to encourage you to enter, prizes will be given that arc far above any that have ever been offered in this state. I am sending you the rules which will govern the contest. This contest would not have been possible except Cult several members of the Columbia chamber of commerce have subscribed the prize money. In no way < an yon better show your appre ciation of this kindness than by mak ing cut l ies of your butter, milk and cream. Chief Rawl of the Daily Div ision of the C. S. Dept. of Agriculture has promised to send one of his most expert men to judge the classes, and, therefore, you will be sure to have an impartial judgment of your products. While we have advanced very much in the yield of dairy products, the quality of these products is far below what it should be. There is no better way to learn how to improve the quality than to have your product judge by an expert, and have him point out the defects. Rules for Butter Scoring Contest. As a special inducement for dairy men to enter this contest prizes will be offered hy the Columbia Chamber of Commerce for the following class es of butter: 1st. Dairy butter: butter offered under this ClasslflcatiOl shall ho such as is made, salted and pneked by the dairymen from separator cream and offered in the original package. 2nd. Farm or country butter: but ter offered under this classification shall be such as is made in any way, '??her than from cream obtained by the centrifugal cream separator system. The Contest Will Be Governed by the Following Kniest I. All persons who desire to enter this contest should make application tit once to Prof. J. M. Hurgess, See. of the Live Stock association. Clemson College, S. C, for entry blanks, since all entries must be accompanied by the official entry blanks. 2 An entry will consist of two or more one pound prints of butter. 3. The butter will be scored ac cording to the following stnndard. Flavor, 45; (train, 25; Color, 15; Salt. 10; Pkg..f>. 4. The butter must reach Colum bia by 4 p. m. Saturday. .Ian. 29, and the scoring will be done Monday, Jan. 31. 5. No contestant will be allowed to be present while the butter is being scored, but the results of the contest will be announced on Tuesday. Feb. 1. at the opening session of the South Carolina Live Stock association. The butter will remain on exhibition throughout the meeting of the associa tion. G. Address the shipment to Mr. R. R. Welch, care of Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia, S. C. Ship by express Prepaid. The butter should be carefully packed und wrapped, and. to receive the highest score, should be in the standard pound package which Is 4 5-8 x 2 1-2 x 2 3-8 Inches. The Chamber of Commerce will provide re frigerators for the proper keeping of the butter after it arrives. 7. The butter entered in this con test will become the property of the Chamber of Commerce to help pay the expenses of the show. S. Butter to be entered in classes 1 and 2 must be made in South Caro lina. it. No one will be allowed to make entries in more than OHO class. 10. All butter that scores above 90 will receive a "diploma of merit. Rules for .Milk and Cream Scoring Contest. THIS CONTEST WILL BE GOVERN ED BY THE FOLLOWING RILES: 1. An entry of cream will consist of two pints of cream in pint milk bot tles. :!. In order that the milk and cream entered by the exhibitors may be of the same age when scored, it is here hereby specified that the milk, and the milk from which the cream is got ton. shall be drawn from the cow on the morning of Jan. 28 and shipped by express as soon thereafter as possible. 4. No contestant will he allowed to be present while the milk or cream is being scored, but the results will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. l. at the opening session of the South Caroli na Live Stock association.
