THOUGHT BOLL WEEVIL HAD I INVADED COUNTY Bfr. Rurner Jonen Brings Suspicious Insect to Advertiser?Proves to Be Common Leaf Bug. Last Wednesday morning. Mr. Bar ber .Jones of tho Rabun Creek section of the county brought to this office a suspicious looking insect which he had found Inside a cotton boll; he brought also a number of diseased bolls and cotton leaves found near where this bug or insect had been working. Believing to be the famous Texas boll weevil and desiring full information on the subject, the ed itor of The Advertiser was reo, nested by Mr. .tones to send the bug and the specimen bolls to Ctemson college, asking for an opinion thereon. With -commendable dispatch, the Clemson authorities replied at once as follows: Ctemson College, s. ('., August G. 1003. Mr. S. E. Boney. I aureus. S. C. Dear Sir: Your letter of August T.th together specimens of diseased cotton bolls ad dressed to Prof. Harper, has been re ferred to this office. The insect in question is not the cotton boll weevil but the common cotton leaf bug. (Cal ocoris rapidus). The bolls show that thty have been punctured by this in sect. As far as our records go there lias been no serious damage done to a cotton crop from this insect and in fact the damage is not sufficient to warrant treatment. We will be glad for you to send us any suspicious looking inserts for Identification in order thai we may discover the boll weevil :>s soon as possible should it enter this state. Very truly yours, w. A. Thomas, state Entomologist. Wants Cross Bond Signs. Editor The Advertiser; i notice that several of the counties, Abbeville especially, want the si-ju posts a.t the public cross roads rebuilt and kept in repair. It seems to me that the custom of marking the high ways is a most excellent one and it Is to be regretted that it lias fallen into disuse. V?'hen a boy I remember see ing them, but now they have all dis appeared. They were about ten feet high and on the arms were printed the destination of the road. To a ^traveler they were very convenient as a guide. It strikes me if Laurens county had new and up-to-date sign posts at the cross roads and along the high ways the effect would be great. They might help the automobile drivers too. What say you Mr. Supervisor One Who Travels. Laurens, S. C. August 9, 1009. SIMS-M AII.DIX NUPTIALS. Mr. < has. L.
