A few weeks ago the writer had the happy privilege of visiting under very auspicious circutii stances the progressive little town of Gray Court, which Is delightfully sit uated on the Charleston and Western Carolina railroad in I,aureus county. 20 miles from Greenville and It) from Laurens. The town covens an area of one mile square ami is picturesque ami attrac tive to an unusual degree, Im pressing a stranger as having a bright future in prospect, The grand and stately Ulue Itidgc mountains form a beautiful back ground, as it wore, although so far dis tant their lofty heights seem to keep a silent watch over the town ami na turally one looks from nature to na ture's Coil. This section is well wooded and abounds in deep and sparkling streams that ripple and (low through a line farming country. Well cultivated Heids of grain ami other fa rill products are greatly in evidence. The population, though small at pre.-, out, is increasing at a steady rate and all who move in are substantial, en terprising citizens. There is a commendable amount of public spirit shown whenever an en terprise is launched, the mayor of the town. Mr. I. X. Leak', being very pro gressive and possessed of sound judg ment and ability. His associates in office, wardens of this embryo city, Messrs. I., c. Dor roh, B. T. Shell, it. I.. Gray and 0. K. Dorroh are progres sive, live business men who are ever ready to labor for the advancement of their tow n. The mental development of the young is under the management of an able corps of tea*liters, with Mr. .1. A. Willis as principal, who assemble at the Gray Court-Owings institute, which is pleasantly located in a native grove of beautiful oaks. A tennis court and ball ground show to the casual vis itors that (he physical development of the pupils is not neglected. The cost or the building is $10.000, the land having been donated by friends of edu cation. There are two churches, Methodist and Presbyterian. The former erected at a cost of $3,000, is handsomely situ ated on an eminence overlooking the town and commands an extensive view of the numerous homes of this vicin ity. There is a membership of 150 at the Gray Court church and Kin in the entire circuit. The present pas tor. Uev. H. M. Dtlbosc, with his noble wife and interesting family are higlify esteemed and doing a good work at this point and elsewhere; the writer can testily to the kind hospitality that is bestowed upon the erstwhile guest and "stranger who tallies within their gates." The Methodist church building de mands more than a passing notice, for one does not often lind so handsome and Conveniently appointed an edi fice outside of a large town. It is modern and up-to-date in many re spects, with elegant stained glass win dows, semi-circular pews, sloping doors, Sunday school rooms, pastor's study with library, numerous outran ces. and good heating facilities The value of the lot is estimated, with the church included, at $0,000, Including also a very handsome memorial win dow erected to the memory of Mr K. \j, Cray, who was the foremost in the development of this section ami de voted to the cause of Methodism: the tasty and beautiful blending of colors Which is developed in the central lig ure can not fail to impress the oh server. Connected with this church in good running order are two nour ishing missionary societies, the Ladies' and Children's Willing Workers. Mrs. It. 1.. Gray is president id' the former, and Mrs. W. II. McCain of the latter, with Mrs. Gray as lady manager. Sab bath school every Sunday. fttend* Crovtth in Building. There is a steady growth in building, several new residences adorning the line sites that everywhere abound Two or more new stores and a tele phone system in contemplation and four general merchandise firms in op eration and other enterprises testify to the spirit of the town. There is also a modernly equipped drugstore and a splendid new bank in success ful operation. The last mentioned in stitution has been opened lately and represents a capital stock of $20,000 with the latest and most approved fa cilities for handling Cmle Sam's eagles, dollars and cents. The merry sound of the oil mill whistle and ginnery vibrates pleasing ly upon the ear of the visitor and local citizens, while convenient to the mart of trade is found a substantial Partn ers' union warehouse for storing the beautiful fleecy staple which is grown in the well cultivated Heids. One of the most elegant ami con venient residences land there are some beautiful homes) is that of Mr. It I.. Gray, which stands on a slight emi nence adjacent to the town. The build ing is beautiful in proportion, repre sents three stories and embodies all that is modern in appointment and ar tistie in detail and?Anlsb. Clemson. Itock Hill. Wofford and others, are liberally patronized and the older residents seem fully alive to the necessity of qualifying the youth ful generation. The news of the world at large?re ligious, social and political?Is fur nished through the columns of various publications, foremost among the num ber being The State, the most progres sive and ably edited journal of the South. There are from !f> to 20 dally and as many semi-weekly copies re ceived at I his ofllce. We cannot expect to make the association a success without the co-operation of all teachers. Whether you are on the program or not, come to the meeting, and thus by your presence encourage this work of instruction and aid to teachers, and which will in the end be beneficial to the schools over which you have su pervision.
